ABOUT
FOMENTO PARA EL
DESARROLLO
INTEGRAL (FDI)
We are a non-profit organization that seeks to improve
the livelihoods of low-income families through different
developmental projects. We believe in using education
primarily as a tool to eradicate poverty.

EDUCATIONAL
SCHOLARSHIP
PROGRAM
Since 2014, we have been helping subsidize
underprivileged children and youth who demonstrate
good academic performance. We provide them with
educational materials (school supplies and books),
uniforms, school fees and follow-up home visits.

The main donor of these projects has been CLPN, Corazón

para los Niños, an organization based in Holland.

SOME OF FDI'S IMPACT

STORIES
Throughout many years of supporting
our families, we have witnessed
students and their family members
overcoming many hardships, barriers,
and limitations in regards to economic
prosperity, familial issues, and
emotional turmoil.

JONATAN - FULL OF LIFE!

Jonatan is currently 8 years
old, studying in his 2nd year
of primary school.

At 3 and a half years old, he

was diagnosed with acute
lymphoblastic leukemia.
After receiving treatment for
almost 4 years, he has
managed to overcome his
disease and currently
undergoes annual check-ups
to ensure the cancer does
not come back.
Left to Right: Jonatan, Yadira, Josua,

Since 2017, Fomento para el Desarrollo Integral has supported Jonatan’s family by providing
scholarships to all 3 siblings, including Jonatan.

This has allowed the family to send their children to school and deal with the medical
expenses of the disease. Yadira and Josua have finished primary school this year.

Josua, the oldest sibling, has had speech problems and suffered with slower development, yet
he has not been held back in school.

Yadira has coped with her brother’s illness well, as she has demonstrated outstanding
academic performance in school.

The father of the family weaves traditional

clothing for scarce income. During the
years of Jonatan’s illness, the mother was
not able to work due to having to care for
Jonatan as required. Now, she works part-
time cleaning houses.

The children continue to grow and

overcome adversities, although they still
have a long way to go to achieve their goals.

VELÁSQUEZ LÓPEZ SIBLINGS -

SOLIDARITY AND COMMITMENT!
The Velásquez López brothers have an extremely difficult story. Their mother passed away 8 years
ago. The father, an alcoholic, left the family only 2 years following her death.

The two eldest siblings work and provide basic necessities for the family. Mario, the oldest brother, is
the head of the house at 22 years old and works as a blacksmith. Despite his young age, Mario has
demonstrated great responsibility and a resilient spirit in order to care for his younger siblings.

Marcia, Yolanda, and

Wilson have participated in
FDI’s scholarship program
for 3 years now. Despite
the adversity they have
faced in childhood, they
have been stellar students.

They do not cease to

amaze us, because even in
the face of their many
limitations, they have
shown outstanding
academic performance
Left to Right: Yolanda, Marcia, Wilson
year to year.

Marcia is in 3rd grade and finished the 2018 school year with an average grade of 81 points. Marcia has
almost no memory of her mother, as Marcia was very young when they lost her.

Yolanda is in 5th grade, and only has one more year before graduating from elementary school. Her
average grade for 2018 was 67 points.

Wilson is in the 6th grade. His average grade for 2018 was 72 points. He likes soccer and continues to
have a child-like spirit, knowing that he will have to work much harder to achieve a better future for
himself.

Our scholarship program allows us to support their education. Wherever possible, we also provide them
with home visits, love, psychological, and social support.

Our program has made all the difference. Without this kind of support, the three siblings would not have
been able to attend school for the past 3 years. Even with the education they are receiving, however, it
will still take a long time for them to gather the skills and tools they need to build a better future for
themselves.

JOSUE - MOVING FORWARD

WITH CONFIDENCE!
Josue is 18 years old and he has participated in the scholarship program for 3 years. After
being involved with FDI for those 3 years, Josue’s mother requested a scholarship for Cristina,
the younger sister of Josue. The scholarship for Cristina was approved and this allowed the
family to primarily invest their resources into Josue's high school education.

Josue decided to pursue a career that

would allow him to get a job quickly
and after a lot of hard work and
family support, he graduated as a
mechanic.

This year in 2019 Josue managed to

obtain his first paid job, although he
has a limited salary as an apprentice
as he is learning the ropes and new
skills during his first working
experience. He has already begun to
contribute to the family’s economic
funds through his work.

Cristina has followed in her brother's

footsteps and will complete her
middle school education this year.
This family values education very
strongly and they are beginning to
see the strong outcomes of their
efforts through their children’s
success. The family has since
increased its overall income as the
Left to Right: Yolanda, Marcia, Wilson
mother is no longer the only source
of income and her educated children
can help her financially.

Josue ready to get to work!
