PEER DEVELOPMENT GOALS DISCUSSION

PRADEEP PRABURAM – STUDENT NUMBER 40040842

The peer development class was a productive one-hour session. It helped me gain the
necessary clarity and knowledge towards my long-term and short-term goals. We were
asked to list down three goals of ours which we would like to work upon and improve. I listed
the following three as my personal and professional goals:

1. Improve my communication and leadership skills

2. Being more open and expressive about my thoughts
3. Improve time management

After a couple of questions, I was given feedback for these and how to go about improving
my life and achieve these goals eventually. As for my first goal, I understood that there was
a difference between leading and influencing people. Understanding what type of
personality, questioning whether I am people oriented or task oriented and asking the right
OPEN questions during group work will help me better myself in this aspect. My groupmates
also shared their observations about my contributions and my strengths. Most of them
pointed out the fact that I had good analytical skills and could think technically. I can use this
aspect of mine and my characteristic of being people oriented to my advantage.

The feedback for my second goal was that I should be able differentiate between asking
things and saying things as a feedback. A general tip on how to go on about expressing our
feedback helped me a lot. I learnt that:

 I should say, “I feel” and follow it up with a concrete example to support that
argument.
 Be diplomatic
 Never use phrases like: “never”, “always”
 Work on feedbacks received

For my time management, I was asked to question what keeps me busy all the time. This
means that busier, more work gets done without procrastination. This was a real eye opener
to me. Brainstorming causes for procrastinations and keeping frequent alarms to the things
and events to be completed will also help me.

We also received some general feedback on groupwork. I learnt the importance of

brainstorming about deadlines, delegation of work and motivation before the work is started.
As most of my peers had an issue with being more open, we were suggested to try out
theatre sports.

I will make sure that I will try my best to incorporate these feedbacks in my life and work
towards achieving these goals. I will also help out my peers if they need help in any aspect
of their improvement. Thanks for the clarity.
