NOISE POLLUTION

Is generally defined as regular

exposure to elevated sound levels
that may lead to adverse effects in
humans or other living organisms.

Decibel

75dB 85dB
• Industrial sounds
• Street traffic sounds • Household sounds
• construction sounds • Events
• Airports • Conflicts
• Workplace sounds
• Constant loud music

Hearing loss

listening to loud music in your

headphones or being exposed to loud
drilling noises at work, heavy air or
land traffic, or separate incidents in
which noise levels reach dangerous
intervals, such as around 140 dB for
adult or 120 dB for children.
Sleep disturbances
caused by constant air or land traffic at night, and they are a serious
condition in that they can affect everyday performance and lead to
serious diseases.
Child development.

Children appear to be more sensitive to noise pollution,

and a number of noise-pollution-related diseases and
dysfunctions are known to affect children, from hearing
impairment to psychological and physical effects.
HYPERTENSION

noise pollution caused elevated blood

levels for a longer period of time.
Various Cardiovascular
Dysfunctions.

Elevated blood pressure caused by

noise pollution, especially during the
night, can lead to various
cardiovascular diseases.
Dementia
isn’t necessarily caused by noise pollution, but its onset can
be favored or compounded by noise pollution.
Psychological dysfunctions and
noise annoyance.

Noise annoyance is, in fact, a recognized

name for an emotional reaction that can
have an immediate impact.

RELEVANT SOURC ES OF ENVIRONMENTAL NOISE
ROAD TRAFFIC NOISE

According to a European Union (EU) publication:

• about 40% of the population in EU countries is exposed to
road traffic noise at levels exceeding 55 db(A)
• 20% is exposed to levels exceeding 65 dB(A) during the
daytime
• more than 30% is exposed to levels exceeding 55 dB(A) at
night
Railway Noise

When a train is moving, there

are several distinct sounds
such as the locomotive engine
noise and the wheels turning
on the railroad track. The air
displacement of a train or
subway car in a tunnel can
create different whooshing
sounds.
AIRCRAFT NOISE

It is divided into three categories:

• Mechanical noise—rotation of the
engine parts, most noticeable when
fan blades reach supersonic speeds.
• Aerodynamic noise—from the
airflow around the surfaces of the
aircraft, especially when flying low at
high speeds.
• Noise from aircraft systems—cockpit
and cabin pressurization and
conditioning systems, and Auxiliary
Power units.
WIND TURBINE NOISE

Wind turbines emit a relatively weak but

characteristic noise. The noise is mainly
generated by the movement of the blades
through the air.
LEISURE NOISE

Examples are listening to portable music players for a

long period of time and a higher volume than the
normal, attending night clubs and live concerts.
EFFECTS OF NOISE POLLUTION
ON WILDLIFE AND MARINE LIFE

BY: JAN MILRENE GARBO

Noise pollution, generally an
unintended by product of
urbanization, transport and
industry, is a key characteristic of
human development and
population growth. In some cases,
it is produced intentionally, for
example when seismic surveys are
being carried out using powerful
airgun arrays to explore and map
seafloor or active sonar, w/c uses
sound waves to detect objects in
the ocean.
• Our oceans are no longer
quiet. Thousands of oil
drills, sonars, seismic
survey devices, costal
recreational watercraft
and shipping vessels are
now polluting our
waters. And that is a
serious cause of noise
pollution for marine life.
Land animals are also affected by noise
pollution in the form of traffic,
firecrackers and etc. Birds are
especially affected by the increased air
traffic.
What are the implications for wildlife, particularly
given how important sound production and
hearing are for the range of behaviors, such as
locating food, avoiding predators and finding a
mate?
• Bats and dolphins rely on high frequency sonar
to detect highly mobile prey while red deer,
grasshoppers are among the many species the
advertise their dominance and desirability
using vocalisations.
The foraging, vocal behavior and physiological
stress of cetaceans – whales, dolphins and
porpoise – can be impacted by ship noise.
This
is of particular concern for species such as
endangered North Atlantic Whale that
inhabits
costal US waters that experience very high
levels
of shipping traffic.
