Honda Air Bag Restraint System

Honda; Odyssey

* PLEASE READ THIS FIRST *

WARNING: To avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and
carefully follow all WARNINGS and SERVICE PRECAUTIONS.

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) is designed to protect

driver and front passenger by activating when vehicle receives a
sufficient front-end impact. System includes driver-side air bag,
passenger-side air bag, SRS unit (including safing sensor and impact
sensor and back-up power circuit), and cable reel. See Fig. 1.

For air bag to deploy, main circuit in SRS unit judges force
of impact and, if necessary, transmits an ignitor signal to inflator
inside air bag assembly, causing air bag to inflate. If battery
voltage is too low or power is disconnected due to impact, voltage
regulator and back-up power circuit will keep voltage at a constant
level.

NOTE: SRS wiring harness and connections are Yellow.

SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK

When ignition is turned on, SRS indicator light should come

on for about 6 seconds and go off. While vehicle is driven, light
should not come on or flash. If SRS indicator light does not operate
as specified, system must be inspected/repaired as soon as possible.
See DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.

SERVICE PRECAUTIONS

* PLEASE READ THIS FIRST *

Observe these precautions when working with air bag system:

* Disable SRS before servicing any SRS or steering column

component. Failure to do this could result in accidental air
bag deployment, possibly causing personal injury. See
DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
* Wait about 3 minutes after disabling air bag system. A
back-up power circuit capacitor (in SRS control unit)
maintains system voltage for about 3 minutes after battery
is disconnected. Servicing air bag system before 3 minutes
may cause accidental air bag deployment, possibly causing
personal injury.
* After an accident, all SRS components, including wiring
harness and brackets, must be inspected. If any components
are damaged or bent, they must be replaced, even if air
bag did not deploy. Check steering column, instrument panel
steering column reinforcement plate and lower brace for
damage. DO NOT service/repair any component or wiring. If
components or wiring are damaged or defective, replacement
is required.
* Always wear safety glasses when servicing SRS or handling
an air bag.
* DO NOT attempt to disassemble air bag assembly. Neither
component has any serviceable or reusable parts.
* A replacement air bag assembly must be stored in its
original special container until used for service. Special
container must be stored in a clean, dry place, away from
sources of extreme heat, sparks and high electrical energy.
* When placing a live air bag assembly on a bench or other

surface, always face air bag and trim cover up, away from
surface. This will reduce motion of air bag assembly if
accidentally deployed.
* After deployment, air bag assembly is very hot. Wait 30
minutes before handling.
* After deployment, air bag surface may contain deposits of
sodium hydroxide, which can irritate skin. Always wear
safety glasses, rubber gloves and long-sleeved shirt during
clean-up, and wash hands using mild soap and water. Follow
correct disposal procedures. See DISPOSAL PROCEDURES.
* DO NOT allow any electrical source near inflator on back of
air bag assembly.
* When carrying a live air bag assembly, trim cover pad should
be pointed away from your body to minimize injury in case of
accidental air bag deployment.
* DO NOT probe any wire through insulator; this will damage
wire and eventually cause failure due to corrosion.
* When performing electrical tests, always use test harnesses
recommended by manufacturer. See SPECIAL TOOLS article in
this section. DO NOT connect tester probes directly to
component connector pins or wires.
* DO NOT use any type of electrical equipment other than that
specified by manufacturer. See SPECIAL TOOLS article in
this section.
* If SRS is not fully functional for any reason, vehicle
should not be driven until system is repaired. DO NOT remove
any component or in any way disable system from operating
normally. If SRS is not functional, park vehicle until
repairs can be made.

SPECIAL TOOLS

To avoid accidental air bag deployment when testing or

working around SRS, use recommended tools. See RECOMMENDED TOOLS table
and Fig. 2.

SRS includes a self-diagnostic function that checks system

for faults in SRS components and related wiring. A fault is present if
SRS indicator light on instrument cluster:

* Continues to glow after ignition is turned on and more

than 6 seconds have elapsed.
* Glows or flashes while vehicle is driven.

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC)

SRS indicator light indicates DTC by number of blinks when

SCS service connector is connected to service check connector.
* In case of a continuous failure, DTC will be indicated
repeatedly.
* In case of an intermittent failure, SRS indicator light
will indicate DTC 1 time, then it will stay on.
* If both a continuous and an intermittent failure occur, only
DTC of continuous failure will be indicated
repeatedly. After troubleshooting DTC, recheck to make sure
that problem has disappeared and that there are no
other codes. Then, erase memory.
* In case system is normal (no DTC), SRS indicator
light will start to blink.

RETRIEVING TROUBLE CODES

1) Turn ignition OFF. Connect SCS service connector to

service check connector. See Fig. 17.

Fig. 17: Locating SRS Indicator Light & Service Check Connector
Courtesy of American Honda Motor Co., Inc.

1996 Honda Odyssey

2) Turn ignition ON. SRS indicator light comes on for about 6

to 30 seconds and goes off. DTC will be indicated next. Record DTC. If
a DTC is not indicated within 1 minute, follow troubleshooting
procedure for DTC 9Ä1 No Code.

TROUBLESHOOTING OF INTERMITTENT FAILURES

NOTE: If there was a malfunction, but it doesn't recur, it will be

stored in memory as an intermittent failure, and SRS
indicator light comes on.

1) Record DTC. (If there is only DTC 5Ä1, replace unit.)

Remove SCS service connector from service check connector. Erase DTC
memory base. See ERASING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE MEMORY article in
this section. Turn ignition OFF, and wait 2 to 3 seconds.
2) With car in neutral, start engine and let it idle. Connect
SCS service connector to service check connector. SRS indicator light
will blink continuous short blinks. Shake wire harness and connector,
and/or take a test drive, and/or turn steering wheel fully left and
right and hold it there for 20 to 30 seconds, to determine cause of
intermittent failure. If problem recurs, SRS indicator light will stop
blinking and stay on. If intermittent failure is not duplicated,
system is OK. Disconnect SCS service connector.

ERASING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE MEMORY

NOTE: Use SCS service connector instead of a jumper wire.

Otherwise, you may not erase memory since it is awkward
to connect and disconnect a jumper wire quickly enough.

1) Turn ignition switch OFF. Disconnect SCS service connector

from service check connector. Connect SCS service connector to MES
connector. See Fig. 18.

Fig. 18: Locating Memory Erase Signal (MES) Connector

2) Turn ignition switch ON. SRS indicator light will come on

for about 6 seconds then go off. Remove SCS service connector from MES
connector within 4 seconds after SRS indicator light went off.
3) SRS indicator light comes on again. Reconnect SCS service
connector to MES connector within 4 seconds after SRS indicator light
comes on.
4) SRS indicator light goes off. Remove SCS service connector
from MES connector within 4 seconds. SRS indicator light indicates
that memory is erased by blinking 2 times.
5) Turn ignition switch OFF, and wait 2 to 3 seconds. Turn
ignition switch ON again. SRS indicator light should come on and go
off after about 6 seconds. Confirm that it does not come on again
after another 30 seconds. Turn ignition switch OFF.

(1) - When you keep ignition switched ON, or keep engine

cranking with low battery voltage (discharged
battery), this may be self-diagnosed as a failure in
SRS system, and SRS indicator light may
indicate multiple DTCs 9Ä2, 5Ä1, 5Ä1. In this case,
troubleshoot DTC 9Ä2.
(2) - If an intermittent failure occurs, DTC 9Ä1 will be
indicated. In case of a continuous problem, there will
be no DTC.
