SAFETY HARBOR WATERFRONT PARK

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

GOAL 1: Create a public waterfront space which provides opportunities for a variety of user
groups and experiences

Objective 1: Provide areas of relaxation, contemplation and calm


Objective 2: Provide areas for multiple age groups and activity levels (i.e. appropriate
activities for children, young adults, and seniors)
Objective 3: Provide areas for temporary events, such as annual festivals, farmers
markets, community gatherings
Objective 4: Provide access to the water for water sporting activities, such as
canoeing, kayaking, fishing

GOAL 2: Create a public space that promotes and enhances the economic opportunities for
the downtown area and businesses

Objective 1: Provide amusement/entertainment attractions to encourage new and


repeat visitors
Objective 2: Provide safe and efficient pedestrian connections to the downtown and
the Bayshore Linear Greenway and Trail.
Objective 3: Provide sufficient parking to accommodate uses and expected increase in
visitor traffic

OVERALL PARK CONTEXT:

• Create both a local and regional attraction which enhances the downtown businesses and
creates a positive visitor experience which produces return visits.
• Provide pedestrian connectivity north/south through the park, integrating it with the Bayshore
Trail.
• Maximize water views **
• Preserve wetlands and mangroves, and allow public access to water **
o Allow access to water
 a beach, natural coastline **
 provide access to water recreation
o Allow access through wetlands along a boardwalk trail
o Consider County mangrove guidelines
• Provide a commercial component, such as a restaurant **
• Provide additional opportunities for boat access
o Provide non-motorized boat access (kayak, canoes, paddleboards) **
o Improve or relocate existing Marina boat launch facility
o Provide boat trailer parking if existing Marina boat launch remains
• Use Low Impact Design strategies and/or BMPs (ie, Florida-friendly plants, limited impervious
surfaces)

PARKING:
• Provide adequate parking **
o Provide standard surface parking;
o Provide boat trailer parking;
o Consider structured parking, although this was not unanimous amongst all teams.
o Establish a parking agreement with the SH Resort and Spa
