School newspapers are a product of students’ versatile technical skills. They have

been a staple of campus life for as long as the existence of the public education system.

They report events both within and beyond the institution (information), express its

opinion, discuss topics commonly aiding the curriculum (education), guard the rights of its

stakeholders (watchdog), train learners to become journalists (laboratory), document

achievements, entertain their readers, and develop their community (Fig. ) (Cruz, 1991).

3
Readership, however, is falling in the advent of the digital age. Recent changes

have forced them to publish less frequently and work with significantly shrunken staffs

(Hu, 2013). To adapt, publications cut costs by reducing the size of the paper or moving it

online altogether (Cruz & Delos Reyes, 2014). This urgently calls for an assessment of

print media to determine what steps to take next.

Fig. : Factors in Newspaper Readership

Various factors play in newspaper readership. This study focuses on four of them:

topic relevance, language used, graphic design, and accessibility (Fig. ).

News, according to Cruz (1991), must “be appealing to a particular reader”
