An Open Letter to PM Modi by a
Kashmiri Pandit
Dear PM Modi,
August the 5th was a historic day when
in one sweeping masterstroke Home
Minister Amit Shah demolished the oft-
repeated myth that the ‘Kashmir Issue’
could not be handled. For as long back as
I can remember, Kashmiris like me, were
told there was no solution to this problem.
We grew up in an environment where
‘Protests’ over something or the other
were a weekly feature. As time went by, the
lack of timely action from the Govt at the
Centre emboldened the Troublemakers,
encouraging them to believe they were
above all laws of the nation.
The meticulously planned actions of your
Govt over the past few days have proved
that nothing is impossible, provided the
Govt in power has the desire. It has been
proved today that when the PM and his Govt
are determined to take corrective measures,
nothing can stop them. It pains me to think
that had the Congress shown even half the
determination displayed today, we Kashmiri
Pandits would not have been kept away from
our homes for almost three decades. There
are those who will dismiss your gesture as
one favouring Hindus, let me remind them
that India as a nation has a responsibility
towards my displaced Community which

was never taken seriously. Those who
call themselves secular must answer why
they have chosen to ignore the fact that it
was because of our religion that we were
hounded out.
The State of Jammu & Kashmir does not
comprise of the Kashmiri Muslims alone, as
so many of our ‘Intellectuals’ and activists
would have us believe! The people of Jammu
and Ladakh have suffered step-motherly
treatment for far too long. By giving Union
Territory status to Ladakh, your Govt has
fulfilled a long-pending demand of those
peace-loving people. The name of the State
did not even mention Ladakh, you gave
it the identity that it had lost to Kashmir-
centric policies.
Jammu will balance Kashmir and help
to keep it intact. The revocation of the
contentious Art370 will bring progress
and development to the Valley which lies
in economic shambles. The free entry of
entrepreneurs will ensure employment
and development, both badly required in
Kashmir. With time, as people come in from
the rest of India, the fabric of Kashmir will
turn multicultural and progressive again.
The locals will learn to look beyond their
own, narrow approach and embrace new
ideas and ways of life.
The Kashmiri youth need better role models,
they need to look beyond the confines that
they have been limited to, by their selfish
ruling class.
Hopefully, this integrating move will enable
them to look beyond religion and assimilate
with the rest of India. Those who still argue
that Kashmir needs to be ‘safeguarded’ and
kept separate, are preventing the healthy
assimilation of Kashmiris with the rest of
the vibrant nation. A nation that has always
respected and promoted various cultures
and traditions of each State/region. Why
is it that some Kashmiris demand special
treatment while Kashmiris like me have
never been privy to any of those privileges?
What is it that distinguishes the Kashmiris
who live in the Valley from those who were
deprived of that right? If it is religion, then
there is more reason that the Valley MUST
be integrated with the rest of the nation.
Should secular India promote separate
enclaves based solely on religion? I’m sure
even our esteemed Liberals will not disagree
over this point!
For Kashmiri Pandits, the day has brought
nothing short of a miracle. We are truly
ecstatic because for the first time in 29
long years, we have seen the path leading

in real sense
As India celebrates 72nd Independence
Day this year on 15th August, a ritual to be
followed by both ‘Aam’ And ‘Khaas’, one
wonders whether we are an independent
nation in real sense. Many would argue that in
the wake of recent events and developments,
where many historic decisions have been
taken by the incumbent government,
now we are finally heading towards true
independence. In India this could still be a
debatable issue as even after 72 years, the
country has not achieved that was needed to
achieve, in an over seven-decade long period
of time.
The common man in the country, especially
those at the lowest strata of the society are still
deprived of not only basic living amenities but
basic human rights also. The socio-political
system adopted by the then governments
failed to delver to all its citizens fairly and
equally. Those with political clouts and might
went on becoming rich to richer and poor
became poorer in absence of a transparent,
honest and fair distribution of resources.
Many historic blunders were made by the then
Prime Minister and other political leaders, in
unifying the India of that era, which was then
split in over 550 princely states. Our country
has paid a very heavy price for those blunders
of our leaders. The unresolved and disputed
issue of Kashmir was one of those blunders
made by the then leadership. It was a non-
issue, which was conceived as a disputed issue
and internationalised, due to the short-sighted
views and wisdom of country’s first Prime
Minister.
For a seemingly small blunder of an individual,
India paid such a heavy price that we have
fought three wars with our arch enemy and
lost thousands of lives of our brave soldiers
and civilians both, in past 72 years since
independence. This special or autonomous
status given to the state of Jammu & Kashmir,
proved to be the root cause of the bloody and
violent history of Kashmir. Due to this special
status to state, successive central governments
spent billions of rupees for the growth and
development of the state but in absence of
any accountability due to the special status,
the money given to for the development never
reached to the common man. The caucus of

Sucharita Varma, Director of Sahaayta,

South Asian Trust Inc has a vision to uplift
the status, health and wellbeing of the South
Asian community. They have been providing
counselling and social support to vulnerable
families of migrant and refugee backgrounds.

appropriate holistic services to thirty

provided through their service delivery arm
Sahaayta. Sahaayta was established to meet

supported over 3000 families free of charge in

The services include home visits, individual,

groups (SAHAARA), anger management; self
esteem groups (SAVERAA) and also conduct
early intervention & prevention community
awareness programmes (SOCH). Their team
has developed culturally appropriate South
Asian Men’s non- violence programme
(AHIMSA). They currently deliver one on
one parenting programme for their clients
(PARVARISH). They are also contracted to
deliver Gandhi Nivas (GN) men’s programme.
Sahaayta delivered Women’s groups in
Canterbury region in 2018. A series of
workshops were conducted in Christchurch

extended family harm, coerced marriages in
ethnic communities through interviewing

As the team continues to support over 1000
families a year, most of whom are affected
by family harm with no government funding,

Official Cash Rate Cut to New Record Low

The Reserve Bank (RBNZ) has shocked
many analysts by slashing the official
cash rate (OCR) by more than double the
forecasted cut, down to a new record low
– which immediately had a ripple effect
on mortgage rates.
Here’s what you need to know:
The RBNZ announced last week that
the official cash rate was cut to a new
record-low of 1 per cent, surprising many
analysts who had only predicted fall of
0.25 per cent. The banks immediately
reacted to the news, with ASB being
the first, announcing its variable home
loan rate would fall by 0.5 percentage
points to 5.2 per cent on August 14 for
new customers, with existing customers

cut its floating mortgage rate by 0.5

Around one in five children need extra
support for their learning. We know
all children learn differently and some
need some extra help whether they
are neurodiversity, gifted or at risk of
disengaging from education. Therefore,
when the Prime Minister committed nine
months ago to providing 600 additional
learning support coordinators to schools
by 2020, we were pleased there was going
to be additional support. Unfortunately,
the allocation of the policy has been
inequitable and unfair, with many schools
and children missing out in communities
that have huge numbers of children with
additional needs.
In parliament this week, Minister Tracey
Martin said she was “really pleased” with
her allocation of the policy and would
not be changing her decisions, despite
documentation being released which
shows that even Oranga Tamariki had
concerns with the distribution. It appears
the Government has not actively targeted
the policy to schools with the most need
but instead has only allocated to schools
who are currently implementing the
Government’s learning support delivery
model.
I have been contacted by upset and angry
schools who have huge need and weren’t
offered the opportunity to be part of
this and didn’t know this would be the
criteria. The learning support action plan
is not funded in several areas with some
criticising it will take six years to deal with
the waiting lists.
This means a school that may already have
huge resource might get one or two extra
coordinators and schools with little or no
resource and high needs miss out. We know

that in places like the Far North and South
Canterbury there is hardly any support
being allocated.
The Minister has justified backlash on the
policy by stating ‘We seem to live in a world
where somebody’s got to complain about
everything’. We don’t think this is the right
attitude when we are dealing with children
who have complex needs.
Investment in early intervention and
learning support is always a positive step
for children and families who need the
assistance. That’s why National invested
record amounts for learning support of
around $658 million a year by the time we
left office, a 30 per cent increase since 2008.
We did what we could with what we had,
which was a limited envelope given the
Canterbury earthquakes and the global
financial crisis. We knew we had to do more
than just pour more money in – we needed
to reform the system itself. That’s why we
kicked off an update of learning support
which included testing a new model that
aimed to make accessing learning support
simpler and quicker for all involved.
We believe there is a lot more to be done
to reform our system, so it supports kids
with dyspraxia, autism, dyslexia and mental
health issues to get the support they need.
National is working on an education
discussion document that seeks to address
these issues but also asks these questions
of parents and educators so you can have
your say.
I am working with my colleagues to
encourage the Minister to change her
decisions or provide additional support
so that children with complex needs
get the support that they deserve, and
communities do not miss out.

Two big ticket Hindi films in Mission
Mangal and Batla House release
worldwide on the 15th of August.
Mission Mangal stars Akshay Kumar
and Batla House is top lined by John
Abraham. 15th August is India’s
Independence Day, and this gives
films a holiday period to hopefully
attract additional footfalls.
Both these films have patriotic
undertones. The most prolific and
versatile star of Hindi cinema –
Akshay Kumar returns to the big
screen with Mission Mangal, for
his second release of the year after
Kesari. He plays the role of a scientist
leading a team, which marked India's
first interplanetary expedition. Sci
fi is a genre which is very popular in
Hollywood, but not really tapped by
Hindi cinema. This is one of the rare
films that stars multiple leading ladies
with a single male actor. Taapsee
Pannu, Sonakshi Sinha and Vidya
Balan co-star with Akshay Kumar, but
are not paired opposite him. Mission
Mangal is a good example of how a
more progressive society reflects on
the kinds of films being made. A few
years ago a film like this would have
been inconceivable. Today people
look at a film in its entirety, and not
solely through the prism of its male
lead star.
Batla House has John Abraham in
a film that is a good example of the
kind of cinema he has regularly done
in the past few years. Since turning
producer with Vicky Donor in 2012,
he has made a conscious effort
to make content rich cinema and
portray intense roles on screen, which
derive their inspiration from real life
incidents. His films like Madras Café
and Parmanu are performance based
films not adhering to conventional
masala film norms, but still engaging
the audiences, leading to their
acceptance.

idea to have films clashing at the box
office. It has happened in the past,
and as more films get made and their
shelf lives shrink – it will become a
more prominent occurrence. Last year

CWC'19 final: Overthrow
incident to be reviewed in September
The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has
announced that the overthrow incident
involving Ben Stokes and Martin Guptill
in the World Cup final will be reviewed in
September this year.
"The WCC (World Cricket Committee)
discussed Law 19.8 in relation to
overthrows, in the context of the ICC
Men's Cricket World Cup Final. WCC felt
that the Law was clear, but the matter will
be reviewed by the laws sub-committee
in September 2019," the MCC said in an
official statement.
England had scripted history as it
claimed its first-ever World Cup title on
July 14. The final will be remembered for
ages as it did not have a winner after the
50-over and super over action, as both
were tied.
In the end, England were announced
as the winner as they had hit more
boundaries (26) as compared to New
Zealand (17) in the match. New Zealand
had set up 242 for England. As the hosts
needed nine runs off three balls, all-
rounder Ben Stokes hit the ball into the
