A key turning point in my professional development was when I finally realized the
difference between teaching a project and teaching for artistic literacy. This is when I
changed my professional emphasis from teaching seemingly asynchronous activities to
teaching for the creation of work that truly makes a difference in learners’ lives.
I had no answers but I had a mission to find some. I focused my research on teaching
approaches that could lead to improved student learning: art therapy, interdisciplinary
units, service learning, open studio, and more. The answer I found was not any single
educational approach. It was to learn more about learners themselves and to help them
find individual avenues toward creative growth; therefore, I enrolled in the Master of
Science Teaching and Learning program at MSU, Mankato with an emphasis on
Curriculum and Assessment Writing. My thesis, Improving Students’ Artistic Efficacy:
Studio Production versus Multi-faceted Art Curriculum, proved invaluable in my
professional goal of teaching to make a difference.
Today I have my second master’s degree: Master of Arts in Art Education. My most
recent thesis is, Reexamining the Qualities of Good Art Curriculum: Rewriting Curriculum
with New National Arts Core Standards. My life-long professional goal is to positively
influence as many people as possible through superior, well-researched visual arts
education. Ultimately, I truly believe in the value of maintaining good visual literacy
throughout a lifetime, and this lifelong skill is developed upon a quality educational
foundation.
