Comparative Study 0.440Kv and 11Kv Power Supply
Comparative Study 0.440Kv and 11Kv Power Supply
Reliability
The power system use for both scheme is radial type configuration, which is the most economical type of supply. In both
scheme, only the Yamama Gas Metering Station have an ATS installed which provide back-up supply if the main supply
fails. But for Aramco Metering Station feeder configuration used is radial which offers minimum reliability (circuit-out
conditions). For reliability standpoint, both scheme are comparable.
Selection
Scheme-2 uses 11kV medium voltage as main power supply and shall be located near the utilization voltage (near
distribution load) in order to have a reduced current at the higher voltages. This lower current means smaller or fewer
conductors to distribute power. Using smaller or fewer conductor decreases the amount of copper and therefore reduces
cost. Conduit and installation cost are also lower.
Another advantage of using 11kV as medium power supply it helps minimize the voltage drop. In Scheme-1, due to length
of the power source, the feeder cable must be oversized or run in parallel cables to compensate the voltage drop.
However, in Scheme-2 the feeder load current is smaller, resulting in less voltage drop. This smaller voltage drop
eliminates the need to oversize conductors and make the overall system more efficient.
The table below show the comparison between LV and MV equipment cost.

Recommendation
Based from above evaluation, it confirms that Scheme-2 is more reliable and very cost-effective.
