POLLUTION IN JODHPUR

PROJECT PROPOSAL
SOCIAL STUDIES 7

I. BACKGROUND OF JODHPUR

Jodhpur City was founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha. It is not only polluted because of the improper disposal of
waste, but also because of all the vehicles and factories that emit smoke. Research shows that it is mainly polluted
because of it. Many people use vehicles like cars and motorcycles to roam around for Jodhpur is such a famous
tourist spot.

Jodhpur’s population is 1.728 million at the moment. It is a very busy town wherein they produce a number
of resources. The items manufactured here include textiles, metal utensils, ink and sporting goods. A flourishing
cottage industry exists for the manufacture of items such as glass bangles, cutlery, carpets and marble products.
They manufacture a lot of goods, meaning they build many factories and industries which also causes the air pol-
lution in the city.

Jodhpur has a very arid climate. Rajasthan, in fact, is surrounded by deserts, hills, and some lakes. For exam-
ple, Thar Desert, Balsamand Lake and Limestone Hills.

II. ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEM AND BACKGROUND

Jodhpur is Rajasthan’s most polluted city and grabbed 30th spot in the global rankings, followed by Jaipur
which ranked 33rd. Kota was at 58th and Udaipur as the 59th place. Jodhpur’s PM 2.5 count was at 101 microgram
per cubic meter of air – five times the WHO safe limit of 20 and more than double the Indian standard of 40. The
cities in the state have concentration of industries and vehicles which is the main source of air pollution.

III. RECOMMENDED IMPROVEMENT

We have devised a project to address this problem. RENT A BIKE. Since bikes do not emit smoke and harm
the environment, it is the perfect solution. Rent-a-Bike aims to create a cleaner and safer environment for the lo-
cals and tourists by promoting the reduction of the number of vehicles which emit harmful gases being driven
around the city, develop this area and at the same time, Asia without harming its surroundings and lastly, minimize
the car pollutants in the air which cause immediate and long-term effects on the environment.

We will start our project by creating an online page wherein anyone from around the world can volunteer
to help, donate old bikes or bike parts, helmets (to be enhanced by the volunteers) and funds. Once we are able to
gather enough volunteers and said items we will begin getting a business permit then look for open spaces for sale
and buy the materials such as the bicycle parking racks and locks. We would desire our stops/stations to be built
near tourist spots preferably near Mehrangarh Fort and Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park. We will then place a variety
of bicycles in each of the stops, a couple bike racks and hire locals and once everything is settled, our project will
finally commence. The customers will be given complementary maps (to be designed by the volunteers) which
marks Jodhpur’s tourist spots and our different stops/stations. Customers are required to give additional payment
if ever they would like their bicycle to come with water or a helmet. Prices will range from 126.95 Rupees (100
Pesos) every 30 minutes. 190.42 Rupees (150 Pesos) per hour.

Since many tourists visit Jodhpur in March, we intend on building the stops/stations around January and
finish before March. We plan on officially opening in the first week of the said month because the weather is just
perfect for touring around the city and this is the time tourists, our target customers, visit Jodhpur the most.

We expect that by the end of 2020, that we will have accomplished all our objectives and make Jodhpur an
even more beautiful tourist spot. If we join hands, starting in our families, expanding to our communities, there
will be no need to be afraid of the chemicals in the air and we can significantly lessen a number of pollutants in
the city.
