Mechanics of Materials Assignment – I
(For MDM/MFD/MPD)

1. (i) Two Solid cylindrical rods AB and BC are welded together at B and loaded as shown in
Figure 1. Knowing that the average normal stress must not exceed 175 MPa in rod AB and
150 MPa in rod BC, determine the smallest allowable values of d 1 and d 2 .
(ii) Consider the same rod given in Figure 1. Knowing that d 1 = 50 mm and d 2 = 30 mm, find
the average normal stress at the midsection of (a) rod AB, (b) rod BC.
2. The hydraulic cylinder CF, which partially controls the position of rod DE, has been locked in
the position shown in Figure 2. Member BD is 5/8 inch thick and is connected to the vertical
rod by a 3/8 inch diameter bolt. Determine (a) the average shearing stress in the bolt, (b)
the bearing stress at C in member BD. Convert the given units to SI units and solve.
3. Two forces are applied to the bracket BCD as shown Figure 3. (a) knowing that the control
rod AB is to be made of steel having an ultimate normal stress of 600 MPa, determine the
diameter of the rod for which the factor of safety with respect to failure will be 3.3. (b) The
pin at C is to be made of a steel having an ultimate shearing stress of 350 MPa. Determine
the diameter of the pin C for which the factor of safety with respect to shear will also be 3.3.
(c) Determine the required thickness of the bracket supports at C knowing that the
allowable bearing stress of the steel used is 300 MPa.
4. (i) An axial force of 200 kN is applied to the assembly shown in Figure 4 by means of rigid
end plates. Determine (a) the normal stress in the aluminium shell (b) the corresponding
deformation of the assembly.
(ii) In Figure 4, the length of assembly shown decreases by 0.4 mm when an axial force is
applied by means of rigid end plates. Determine (a) the magnitude of the applied force (b)
the corresponding stress in the brass core.
5. The aluminium shell, shown in Figure5, is fully bonded to the brass core and the assembly is
unstressed at a temperature of 15°C. Considering only axial deformations, determine the
stress in the aluminium when the temperature reaches 195°C.
6. A 60 mm cube is made from layers of graphite epoxy with fibres aligned in the x direction as
shown in Figure 6. The cube is subjected to a compressive load of 140 kN in the x direction.
The properties of the composite material are: E x = 155 GPa, E y = 12 GPa, E z = 12 GPa, γ xy =
0.248, γ xz = 0.248 and γ yz = 0.458. Determine the changes in the cube dimensions, knowing
that (a) the cube is free to expand in the y and z directions (b) the cube is free to expand in
the z direction, but is restrained from expanding in the y direction by two fixed frictionless
plates.
7. For the stress state shown in Figure 7, determine the range of values of θ for which the
normal stress is equal to or less than 50 MPa. (Use both the analytical and Mohr’s circle
method)
