Tutor-marked Assignment 1 (TMA 1 – 25%)

Instructions:
1. This is an individual assignment. No duplication of work will be
tolerated. Any plagiarism or collusion may result in disciplinary action,
in addition to ZERO mark being awarded to all involved.
2. You are to submit online of your answers in OAS system and it
is your responsibility to submit your TMA correctly and timely. OAS
system doesn’t allow re-submission of assignment. Marks will be
awarded for correct working steps and answer.
3. The total marks for TMA 1 is 100 and contributes 25% towards the
total grade.
4. TMA 1 covers the topics in Units 1 & 2.
5. TMA 1 has to be done individually.
6. Your assignment must be word processed (single spacing) and
clearly laid out. Any additional appendices or attachments must be
placed at the end of the submitted document and must be referred to
in the main body of the assignment, or it will not be read by the
marker.
7. All files or documents submitted must be labeled with your WOU ID
and name.
8. Answer all parts in English.
9. The use of Turnitin is not necessary for this TMA.
Question 1 (20 marks)

(a) List four main applications of power electronics. (4 marks)

(b) In linear circuit, the voltage source is vs = 12sin(103t + 24°) V.

i. What is the angular frequency of the voltage? (3 marks)

ii. What is the frequency of the source? (3 marks)

iii. Find the period of the voltage. (3 marks)

iv. Express source voltage vs in cosine form. (3 marks)

v. Determine vs at t = 2.5ms. (4 marks)

Figure 1 shows a full-wave sinusoidal waveform. Given the


peak value of the current waveform is Ip = 100A, To = 8.3ms
and period T = 16.67ms, calculate:-

(a) Describe the operation of a DIAC and its characteristics. (5 marks)


You may draw diagrams to illustrate your answers.

(b) Calculate the rms value and the power applied by a TRIAC (15 marks)
to a 10 load from 230 Vrms 50Hz with a control period of
50.0ms when the TRIAC triggering time is 25ms.
