Warning!
Remote Start System is only applicable to vehicles with automatic transmission! Also,
the IT-s® impact sensor was shipped with the sensitivity turned all the way down. It is
suggested that the sensitivity is to be set by the dealership.

Note: Sportage LX models are not equipped with Factory Security


Systems. Part number: UM040 AY135, Hood Safety Switch Kit is
required and Driver’s Door Priority Unlock feature is not available!

VEHICLE PREPARATION
1. Test the vehicle’s power door locks to ensure they
operate correctly.
2. Lower one or more of the passenger windows so
the keys do not get locked in the vehicle.
3. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.

Overview
The remote car start/keyless entry/security module harness will interface with the
existing Kia ignition switch connector, key-in-sense connector, two junction
connectors, five center splice connections and a ground termination.

Vehicle Preparation
1. Remove driver’s side lower dash
panel, located directly under the
steering column.

A. Disconnect hood release cable from


hood release lever.

B. Remove (3) screws located along


bottom of lower dash panel.

C. Remove the panel using a


trim removal tool. The (5)
pressure clips located along
the top and sides of the
panel are signified by the
arrows on the photo.

2. Remove metal knee bolster.
A. Remove (3) 10mm bolts and
(1) 10mm nut.
Note: If equipped with TPMS,
unplug module.

3. Remove steering column shroud.


A. Remove (3) screws from the lower
half of steering column shroud.

B. Carefully separate the two halfs of


the shroud and remove.

4. Remove step sill trim.


A. Remove the left front step sill
using a trim removal tool. The
(6) pressure clip locations are
signified by the arrows on the
photo. Repeat for right front
step sill (Sportage EX only).

5. Remove kick panel trim.


A. Remove (1) push-type fastener.

B. Carefully pull the weather strip-


ping away from the kick panel.

C. Using a trim removal tool, care-


fully remove left kick panel. The
(2) pressure clip locations are
signified by the arrows on the
photo. Repeat for right kick
panel (Sportage EX only).

6. Install dipole antenna.
A. Carefully pull the driver’s door
weather stripping away from the “A”
pillar.

B. Remove screw cover and single


screw from “A” pillar trim panel.

C. Using a trim removal tool, remove


the “A” pillar trim panel. The (3) pres-
sure clip locations are signified by the
arrows on the photo.

D. Clean the area of the windshield


where the antenna will be mounted
with an alcohol-based glass clean-
ing solution.

E. Mount the dipole antenna to the wind-


shield approximately 0.5” below the
mirrors lowest attachment point and/
or any windshield electronic gridwork.
Remove protective backing. Press
firmly to ensure a good glass to ad-
hesive bond.

F. Route the antenna cable up to the


headliner. Tuck the cable behind the
headliner and down the “A-pillar”. Use
(2) supplied, small wire ties to se-
cure the antenna cable to the factory
harness located within the “A-pillar”.
NOTE: If the vehicle is equipped with
a sunroof, be careful not to place the
wire tie around the drain tube running
down the “A” pillar with the factory
harness.

G. Reassemble “A-pillar” trim panel.

7. Install warning label. WARNING: / AVERTISSEMENT
This vehicle is equipped with a remote controlled engine starter.
To reduce the risk of serious Injury or death, switch engine starter
system into service mode and disconnect the vehicle battery

B. Remove the protective backing from

8. Module Preparation
1. Place fuses into the control module.
A. Observe fuse amperage ratings.
Place the 5 Amp fuse into the “Main
B+” location. Populate the remain-
ing fuse locations with the 15 Amp
fuses. Make sure that the DR DOOR/
TRUNK REL fuse is placed in the (+)
polarity slot as shown in photo.

2. Install DNA into the control module.


A. Insert DNA into the control module.
Ensure the DNA assembly snaps
completely in place.

Installation
WARNING: BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN REACH-
ING UNDER THE DASHBOARD DURING THE
FOLLOWING PROCEDURES, METAL BRACKET
EDGES MAY BE SHARP!
9. Mount the control module.
A. Route the antenna wire down to the
left kick panel area. Plug wire har-
nesses and antenna into control
module before mounting.

B. Use (2) supplied, long wire ties to


secure the module to the back of the
metal support bracket that is
mounted to the left side of the firewall.
This bracket is supporting the ECM
and is secured to the firewall with
(3) 10 mm nuts. Remove the bracket
assembly temporarily to secure the
module if necessary.
10. Route the harness.
A. Route the 14-way and 16-way con-

nectors, green/orange module wire
and programming button over to the
left kick panel.

B. Route black module wire under carpet


toward passenger side and secure to
existing cable with wire ties. Continue
routing black module wire behind cen-
ter console over to right kick panel area.
Secure black module wire to existing
wire harness, along firewall, with wire
ties to conceal the wire (Sportage EX
only).

C. Route the ignition connectors, key-in-


sense connectors and brown and blue
module wires up and over to the steer-

11. Electrical connections.
A. Ignition switch connector -
Disconnect the factory black
6-way connector and plug in
corresponding module har-
ness connectors.

B. Key-in-sense connector -
Disconnect the factory white
6-way key-in-sense connector
located above the ignition con-
nector and plug in correspond-
ing module harness connec-
tors.

C. Parking light connection -


Use quick splice connector
(provided in parts bag or cen-
ter splice (directions in next
section)) to connect the brown
module harness wire into the
brown wire located in pin #14
of the white 18-way M25-1
connector at the multifunction
switch.

G. Ground termination - Locate


the 10mm bolt in the firewall
being used for a factory ground
termination below the control
module mounting location.
Remove the 10mm bolt and
secure black module wire with
ring terminal along with fac-
tory ground wires using 10mm
bolt.

H. Brake switch connection -
Use quick splice connector
(provided in parts bag or cen-
ter splice (directions in next
section)) to connect the pink
module harness wire into the
light pink wire located in pin
#1 of the natural 4-way
brake switch connector.

Sportage EX Only

I. Hood switch connection -


Use quick splice connector
(provided in parts bag or cen-
ter splice (directions in next
section)) to connect the black
module harness wire into the
white wire located in pin #12
of the white 18-way EM02
connector in the right kick
panel. Skip to page 13.

Sportage LX Only
Note: Sportage LX models are not equipped with Factory Security
Systems. Part number: UM040 AY135, Hood Safety Switch Kit (not
included) must be installed. Skip Step I and proceed with Step J to
install the Hood Safety Switch Kit.

J. Remove the ECM.
Remove the bracket assembly sup-
porting the ECM and the control mod-
ule to the firewall by removing (3)
10mm nuts.
K. Drill hole in firewall.
From inside of vehicle, pull back in-
sulation on firewall and drill 3/8” hole
between the mounting studs used to
secure the bracket assembly for the
ECM.
L. Install hood safety switch.
Mount the switch to the driver’s side
of hood as shown in photo. Place
switch as far left, on flat surface, as
possible. Use both mounting holes.
M. Route the Harness.
Run the switch harness along the
hood hinge and secure with (2) wire 4“

ties and tape as shown in photo. Run


harness under plastic cowl cover by
temporarily removing push-type fas-
tener. Continue routing harness
down to drilled hole in firewall. Cre-
ate drip loop in harness and route
through hole. Slide supplied grom-
met over harness and insert into hole
in firewall.
N. Electrical Connections.
Measure and cut the switch harness
wires and strip 2”-3” of the jacketing
off to gain access to the wires inside.
Connect the 2 black wires from the
switch harness to the black/white and
black wires on the module harness
using the supplied quick connects.
The polarity does not matter.

Center splice directions:
1. Find the target wire to be spliced into and remove 1/2” to 1” of insulation
from the target wire. 2. Create an opening in the center of the target wire using
a small screwdriver or awl. 3. Strip approximately 1” of insulation from the
insertion wire to be connected to the target wire and insert the insertion wire
into the target wire opening you created. 4. Twist the insertion wire around the
target wire and tug the insertion wire slightly so that the opening in the target
wire closes tightly. 5. Solder the center-splice connection and insulate the
splice using electrical tape. Refer to diagram below.

12. System power-up


A. Verify that all connections are secure as per installation instructions.

B. Turn the ignition key to the RUN position.

C. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.

D. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position.

E. VERY IMPORTANT - USING THE IGNITION KEY, TURN THE IGNITION


TO THE ON POSITION, THEN CRANK ENGINE UNTIL IT STARTS ONE
TIME. SHUT OFF THE VEHICLE.

NOTE: This vehicle does not require programming of the tach signal that is
necessary on other Kia vehicles. This system uses crank averaging software
to determine the length of time the vehicle will crank when using the
remote start feature. This makes it necessary to start the vehicle at least
once after the battery has been disconnected.

Driver’s Door Priority Unlock Programming (Sportage LX Only).
Hood must be closed!
Battery must be reconnected!

Open the driver’s door.

Turn vehicle ignition to ON position.

Locate programming button.
Note: The Programming / Override button is
located on the driver’s side, mounted on the left
kick panel.
See picture on page 18.

Press and hold programming button 10-15
seconds, horn will beep 3 times.
Release button.

has entered the option programming mode.

Press and release the button on the
transmitter until the horn beeps three times. You Press

Turn vehicle ignition to OFF position to exit option
programming mode and save setting.

Test door unlock functionality. All doors should
unlock with first press of button on the
transmitter. If all doors do not unlock on first

Testing
Reconnect the negative battery cable and test the system at this time. Make sure
the dome lamp fuse is installed. The horn may start beeping. If this happens, press
the unlock button to disarm.
1. Close all doors and press the lock button on the transmitter.
• All doors should lock.
• The parking lights should flash twice.
• The horn should not beep the first time the lock button on the transmitter is
pressed. For lock confirmation, press the lock button again and the horn
should beep twice and flash the parking lights twice.

2. Wait ten seconds, then reach through one of the open windows, unlock the
vehicle’s door and open door.
• The horn should start beeping.
• The parking lights should start flashing.
3. Close door and press the unlock button on the transmitter.
• The horn should stop beeping.
• The parking lights should stop flashing.
• The driver’s door should unlock (Sportage EX only).
• All doors should unlock (Sportage LX only).
• The dome light should turn on.
4. Press unlock on the transmitter button again within five seconds or press
it twice.
• The remaining passenger doors should unlock (Sportage EX only).

5. Press and hold the red panic button on the transmitter for one second.
• The horn should start beeping.
• The parking lights should start flashing.

6. Press the panic button on the transmitter again.


• The horn should stop beeping.
• The parking lights should stop flashing.

7. Enter the vehicle, close all doors and turn ignition on.
• The dome light should turn off.
• Press the lock button on the transmitter, nothing should happen.

NOTE: The IT-s® impact sensor was shipped with the sensitivity turned
all the way down. It is suggested that the sensitivity is to be set by
the dealership. If IT-s® sensitivity is being set at this time, please
refer to page 21 for programming instructions. Then proceed with
step 8. If sensitivity is not being set, go to step 9 at this time.

8. Exit the vehicle and close all doors. Press the lock button on the trans-
mitter and wait ten seconds. Test shock sensor sensitivity by hitting one
of the closed side windows with a bare, open hand. Caution: Rings or
other jewelry may damage vehicle, so remove them before testing.
• The horn should beep on light impacts.
• The horn should sound continuously on hard impacts.
• If the shock sensor sensitivity needs to be adjusted, refer to the program-
ming instructions on page 21.

9. One of the safety features of the remote car start is that it requires two
buttons be pressed in order to trigger the remote car start feature. Press
and release the lock button followed by the remote start button.
• The horn should beep once.
• The parking lights should flash once.
• The vehicle should crank, the horn will beep and the engine will start
running.
• Once the vehicle is running the parking lights should turn on and stay on.

10. While the vehicle is running, reach in and pull the hood release lever. Lift
the hood.
• The vehicle should shut off and stop running.
• The security system will be triggered and should sound continuously.

11. Press the unlock button to shut off the alarm and close the hood. Relock
the doors and restart the vehicle with the remote control. Once started,
press the unlock button on the transmitter and enter the vehicle. Press
the brake pedal.
• The vehicle should shut off and stop running.

12. Place the key in the ignition but do not turn it. Try restarting the vehicle
with the transmitter.
• The parking lights should flash twice and the horn should beep twice
signifying that one of the safety inputs is active (in this case, it is the
key-in-sense circuit.)

13. Remove key from the ignition, exit the vehicle and close the door. Restart
the vehicle with the transmitter. Now, press the unlock button on the
transmitter and enter the vehicle. Place the key in the ignition and turn the
ignition on. Press the brake pedal.
• The parking lights should go off signifying the car is now running with the
key. Turn the vehicle off.

Reassembly
1. Reverse the disassembly procedure. Remember to reassemble all dash-
board components as well as the passenger kick panel (Sportage EX only).

2. Mount programming button -


Drill a 9/32” hole in the left kick
panel and mount programming
button before reassembly of left
kick panel.

3. Retest (see page 16).

Illuminated Entry
Dome light turns ON for 60 seconds when doors are unlocked with Remote Keyless
Entry. Dome light switch must be in the “Door” position for this feature to work.

IT-s® Shock Sensor


The IT-s® Sensor is set at the factory to the lowest sensitivity. If the sensor does not
sound the horn when an impact is given to the vehicle, go to Programming IT-s Shock
Sensor Sensitivity Adjustment on page 21. If by adjusting the sensor to a higher
sensitivity, it still does not sound the horn - replace module and retest. Note: Swap the
DNA to the new module - the transmitters program to the DNA (not the control module).

Open the driver’s door.

Changing the Transmitter Battery

The transmitter battery should last approximately 1 year.

Insert a small coin in case slot. Twist to open.

Remove case backing and locate battery. (+)

equivalent 12V battery.
