Wallonia Beer Route


A tourist route that comes just at the right time because since November 2016 Belgian
beer culture has been listed in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity!
In Wallonia, there are more than 500 beers, renowned for their diversity. Lagers,
ales, amber, white, fruit, stouts, Saison or season beers… for all tastes! Beer culture is
everywhere and historically ingrained in the culture. Breweries, microbreweries and
museums dedicated to this art dot the land. So many places for tastings and discovering
brewing expertise. This beverage, often associated with festivals and conviviality, is used
in many regional culinary recipes.
Typical Walloon operating breweries which can be visited are showcased throughout this
Beer Route. Three of the twelve Trappist abbeys in the world are situated in the Walloon
region – Orval, Chimay and Rochefort Abbeys – and can be found on the route. These
beers, with their unique flavour, are still traditionally made in the heart of Cistercian
abbeys, under the control of the Trappist community.

Wallonia Wine and Spirits Route
The history of Walloon vineyards goes back to the Middle Ages. The monks were the
first to grow vines, who needed a pure and healthy drink for religious celebrations. In
the fourteenth century, all the big towns like Tournai, Dinant, Namur, Huy, Liège, etc.,
had their own vineyard.

During the Renaissance, a less favourable climate made grape cultivation more difficult
and wine was abandoned in favour of beer. In the sixties, a wine grower decided to try
the experience again and planted his first vinestocks in Huy. Since then there are several
vineyards disseminated all over Wallonia.

The Walloon region uses two types of production: the traditional grape varieties (Pinot
noir, Chardonnay, Pinot gris…) and the hybrid grape varieties (Bacchus, Regent…).

There are three AOPs – appellations d’origine protégée (Protected Appellations of


Origin), and a designation with indication géographique protégée (IGP) or Protected
Geographical Indication : Côtes de Sambre et Meuse wines (AOP); Crémant de Wallonie
sparkling wine (AOP); Vins mousseux de Qualité de Wallonie or Wallonia quality
sparkling wines (AOP); Vin de Pays des Jardins de Wallonie local wine (IGP).

The Walloon wine industry is very successful, producing nearly a million bottles annually.

Discover also Walloon spirits and brandies. One of the most popular is Peket, a spirit
made from grains or berries distilled mainly in the Meuse region. It’s a typical Walloon
beverage, a drink for every occasion, and means piquant in old Walloon. Maitrank from
the Arlon region is made from the sweet woodruff flower which is macerated in Moselle
wine with, amongst others, slices of oranges. Eau de Villée, whose reputation continues
to grow, is produced in the Distillerie de Biercée, in the province of Hainaut since 1981.
Finally, 100% Belgian whisky, the award-winning Belgian Owl, is a single malt and
produced in the heart of the Hesbaye region.

These beer, wine and spirits routes developed especially for this year of “A Taste
of the Good Life”, are found throughout the whole of Wallonia. They offer the
opportunity to organise gourmet breaks and extended stays.

Wallonia.

Our regional produce currently benefits from a European designation of quality AOP
– Apellation d’Origine Protégée (Protected Appellation of Origin), IGP Indication
Géographique Protégée (Protected Geographical Indication) or STG Spécialités
Traditionnelles Garanties (Traditional Specialities Guaranteed). Seven products are also
recognised in Wallonia under different categories, for example Ardenne Ham, Herve
Cheese, Ardenne butter, Pâté gaumais, Escavèche de Chimay, Pomme de terre Plate de
Florenville (a potato variety), Peket…

Promotion of Quality in Agriculture
The APAQ-W has a double mission – on the one hand, it’s objective is to develop a
positive image of our agriculture and producers, to promote their quality and know-how
to the general public by way of educational campaigns that foster the development of
taste and flavours.
This awareness of the agricultural world is essential to highlight the Walloon specificity:
small scale farming connected to the soil, environmentally-friendly and valuing the
preservation of its landscapes. The agency also showcases the role of agriculture
and agricultural produce in sustainable development as well as their environmental,
economical, cultural, social and health roles.
On the other hand, the APAQ-W also fulfils a major role in developing the consumption
of all processed or unprocessed produce through multiple actions, such as markets,
fairs, promotional campaigns at shops or in the region. The aim is clear – local produce
everywhere for everyone.

Wallonia Picardy region presents a geographical particularity – it is split by Flanders between

past at the crossroads of three cultures: French, Walloon and Flemish. The region was deeply
