March 15th, 2019 – DEAR Day

During DEAR Day, Ntegeka Initiatives partners with Peace Corps in instigating a writing competition event.
DEAR stands for “Drop Everything and Read”- a Nation-wide event aiming to promote a reading culture,
and encourages everyone to drop everything and engage in reading. In honor of this year’s DEAR Day, we
celebrate the youths who inspire us to read and write more.
In March, 2019 among the many students who wrote, 18 stories were chosen from 6 different schools- 18
students competing in a Creative Writing Competition. With a limit of 200 words and a theme of
“Happiness”, these academic youths wrote some great stories. 18 students competed, but only 3 were
chosen to be the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. In the short stories below/above, we see the amazing
talents in literacy and creativity from our very own Luwero youth.
If you had not read today, then be sure to read New Vision on Wednesday April 3 rd, 2019. The day these
stories were published in the children’s magazine inside. May these winners inspire you to read and
creatively write not only on DEAR Day, but in the many days that follow after.
