BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

K to 12 curriculum was implemented in the educational system of the

Philippines starting year 2012, and on the year 2018 the pioneering batch of the

said curriculum will graduate from the new 6-year secondary school program; 4

years in Junior High School, and 2 years in Senior High School as a preparatory

course/program for tertiary education.

Lately, as senior high students continue their learning and skills

enhancement with their respective strands and tracks, the students, teachers,

and even other family members unavoidably compare the strands the students

took. Particularly in STEM in which most students perceive this strand as the

most difficult and most stressful compared to the other strands because of the

subjects it holds. It relays stereotyping and misconception from students of

HUMSS, ABM, and GAS. In the blog, “How to Choose K to 12 Senior High

School Track and Strand” by Gubalan (2016), the description in the STEM strand

includes the sentence “This is not for the faint-hearted” which implies that there is

stereotyping in this certain strand.
