RADAR SENSORS

RADAR-RADIO DETECTION AND RANGING

Radar sensor has been used automotive for decades and can determine the
velocity, range and angle of objects. It is computationally lighter than other
sensor technologies and can work in almost all environmental conditions.

Radar sensor are classified per their

operating distance ranges-short range radar(SRR) 0.2 To 30m
range, medium range radar(MRR) in the 30-80m range and long range
radar(LRR) 80m to more than 200m range.
WORKING OF RADAR SENSOR
Radar works best at detecting objects made of metal. It has a limited ability
to classify objects, but it can tell you the distance to a detected object . It
uses radio waves to detect and localize objects.

Electromagnetic waves are emitted, hit and bounce back from an object, and

are detected upon their return,to provide information about an object
location and speed.
PLACEMENT OF RADAR SENSOR IN AUTONOMOUS CARS
Current systems are based on short wave sensors at 24GHz or longer
wave at 77 GHz.Both sensors are used at the front and back of the vehicle to
monitor surrounding traffic ranging from a just few centimeters to
hundreds of meters away.

SHORT RANGE SENSORS

The shorter range sensors are found on the corner of the vehicle and
are designed to support highly automated driving. They are generally used
for blind spot, parking assist and emergency braking.

LONG RANGE SENSORS

The long range sensor are placed at the front of the vehicle. They are
generally used for speed and distance measurements. They are also used in
Adaptive cruise control.More robust against challenging envirinments like
rain,fog and snow.
