1889–1956: As a card company
Nintendo was founded as a playing card company by Fusajiro Yamauchi on 23 September
1889.[4] Based in Kyoto, the business produced and marketed hanafuda cards. The
handmade cards soon became popular, and Yamauchi hired assistants to mass-produce
cards to satisfy demand.[5] In 1949, the company adopted the name Nintendo Karuta Co.,
Ltd.,[b] doing business as The Nintendo Playing Card Co. outside Japan. Nintendo
continues to manufacture playing cards in Japan[6] and organizes its own contract bridge
tournament called the "Nintendo Cup".[7] The word Nintendo can be translated as "leave
luck to heaven", or alternatively as "the temple of free hanafuda"
THE GAME VERSION OF MARIO WAS ORIGINALLY A CARPENTER.
In Mario's first appearance in Donkey Kong, he was portrayed as a carpenter. But after a colleague
remarked that his overalls made him look more like a plumber, legendary designer Shigeru Miyamoto
changed the character's occupation. This alteration also led to the game being set underground in the
pipe-populated sewers of New York City.
. Game Boy was invented by a janitor.
Okay, so that’s a slight overstatement, but it's not far off. Gunpei Yokoi was working
maintenance on the assembly line in a Nintendo factory when company president
Hiroshi Yamauchi came around. Yamauchi noticed a toy that Yokoi had built in his
spare time. That toy became the Ultra Hand, a best seller for the company, and Yokoi
moved from the assembly line to the design suite. Yokoi then turned a boring old
calculator into Game & Watch, another huge best seller, and then created the Game
Boy: the crown jewel of handheld gaming devices.
