THICKNESS OF WALLS AND SLABS
RCC WALLS
FOR FIRE RATING
DETAIL SPECIFIED

A structure Or structural element required to have

fire resistance should be designed to possess an
appropriate degree of resistance to flame penetration
heat transmission and failure. The fire resistance of a
structural elements expressed in terms of time in hours
in accordance with IS 1641.

Restrictions on Type of Construction forNew Buiidings ( see IS : 1642-1988 )

For buildings above 15m in height non combustible materials should be

used for construcution and the intermal walls of strircase should be of brick
wall or reinforced concrete or any othe rmaterial of construction with
minimum of 2 hours fire rating.

clause 3.3.1 Non-combustible

materials should be used for
construction of buildings, and the internal walls of
staircase enclosures should be of brick work or
reinforced concrete or any other material of
construction with minimum of 120 min rating.
UIRED FROM FIRE RESISITANCE CRITERIA

For 2Hrs Fire resistance minimum wall thickness is 160mm (*WALLS WITH Pt
in range 0.4% to 1% )for VERTICAL REINF.

160mm WITH 25mm COVER load bearing RCC walls

(*WALLS WITH AT LEAST 1% OF VERTICAL REINF.)

160MM thk. With Pt range of MIN 0.4% to Max 1%

Hwe/t not exeecing 30 for

160mm thk (2900/160 =18.125)

The thickness of structural wall shall not be less than 160mm of H/20
whichever is larger

The minumium thickness shear wall shall not be less than 150mm and
300mm for bldg with coupled shear walls in any seismic zone. The
mimumum thickness provided must confirm to the fire resistance
requirements based on occupancy as laid down in IS 456

RED FOR SINGLE LAYER AND DOUBLE LAYER

For walls of thickness 170 mm or less, where the
insertion of a vibrator may lead to difficulties, a
single layer of vertical and horizontal bars may be provided at the centre of
the wall and an external
vibrator may be used (see Fig. Il.6A).

IN case of walls of
thickness greater than 170 mm but less than or
equal to 220 mm, and also for walls of thickness
greater than 220 mm with more than nominal
reinforcement, provide two layers of reinforcement
in both vertical and horizontal
directions, the former being placed on the inside
of the latter (see Fig. 11.6B). Clips should be
provided to restrain the vertical bars against
buckling, or displacement during concreting. In
walls of thickness greater than 220 mm with
nominal reinforcement, horizontal steel may be
placed inside the vertical steel to reduce the
possibility of the coarse aggregate being ‘hung-up’
on the horizontal bars (see Fig. I 1.6C).
