Introduction/Purpose

 This meeting is intended to briefly discuss Quality

Requirements for Embankment Construction in Sabkha
Areas in the project.

 Sabkha Areas cumulative length is 2.775 KM and

locations are (IFC HA-034902-002-01):
• EPR 0+800 ~ 3+075
• EPR 9+500 ~ 10+000
ITP and Checklists

 ITP and Checklists are already approved.

ITP and Checklists
Sabkha Area – Embankment Details
Rock Fill Material and Placement

 Rock Boulders of Grading 150 mm - 300 mm.

 Sound, Dense, Hard and Durable Rock capable of being
placed and compacted as specified, with Clean and
Angular pieces.
 Individual pieces neither elongated nor flat, longest
dimension not exceeding twice the shortest.
 Minimum 75% of material larger than 200 mm.
 Placement in a manner that larger particles are well
distributed and voids are filled to maximum practical
extent.
 Protruding large particles shall be removed and
replaced with smaller particles.
Rock Fill Material and Placement

 Thickness of rock fill layer shall be bases on unit weight

of vibratory roller:
 Layer Thick (cm) Roller Mass (KG/Unit Width)
40 2300-2900
60 2900-3600
80 3600-4300
100 4300-5000

 For multiple roller, this shall be assessed on the high

axle load.
Rock Fill Compaction Control Test

 Test Section shall be on a surface approved by Saudi

Aramco, with appropriate selected layer thickness.
 Sufficient area to contain 20 leveling points in 5 Sq. m.
 No leveling point shall be less than 3 m from edge.
 Levels shall be taken using a 30 sq. cm plate after 3
roller passes.
 Further level readings shall be taken after 2 more roller
passes.
 Above step to be continued until settlement is less than
1% of compacted layer thickness.
 These number of passes and rolling pattern shall be
used for compaction.
Monitoring Settlement

 Precise leveling of Transverse Section (Min. 5 points) at

max. spacing of 30 m of embankment.

 Continue level readings until on a period of one month,

average settlement rate does not exceed 0.05mm/day.

 No permanent pavement construction until this

specified criteria is met.`
Fill Layer

 Fill Material min. A-2-4 with min. CBR value of 20 to a

60 cm thickness.

 Placement shall be in layers of 20 cm max.

 Type 95 compaction shall be achieved for each layer.

 Process shall be completed in accordance with

approved method statement for Earthworks.
Filter Layer

 A compacted filter layer of 20cm thickness, consisting of

ASTM C33, Table 2, Size No. 357 shall e next fill layer
after rock fill.

 Geotextile weighing 300gsm with tensile strength of

17KN and biaxial polypropylene with tensile strength of
30KN shall be placed under Filter Layer.

 Biaxial polypropylene with tensile strength of 30KN and

geotextile weighing 300gsm with tensile strength of
17KN and shall be placed Above Filter Layer.
Geotextile Installation

 Geotextile shall be placed as per IFC drawing.

 Overlap of sheets in either direction be min. 600mm.
 At time of installation, fabric shall be free of defects.
 Surface to receive fabric shall be free of objects with
may cause damage.
 Localized damage can be repaired with patched
extending min 1 m from the damage in all directions.
 Extensively damaged fabric shall be removed as
directed by Saudi Aramco.
 Place next specified layer within 14 days of fabric
installation.
Geotextile Installation

 Any deterioration shall result in rejection and

replacement of the fabric.
 Fabric shall be replaced if not covered within 30 days.
 Construction equipment shall not be permitted directly
on the fabric.
 Fabric shall be protected against contamination by
surface runoff.
 Any such contaminated fabric shall be removed an
replace with new one.
Geogrid Installation

 Geogrid shall be placed smooth and level per IFC

 Surface to receive geogrid shall be free of obstructions,
depressions and debris.
 Geogrid shall be placed smoothly either parallel or
perpendicular to the centerline.
 Unnecessary stretching shall be avoided and rolls shall
be unrolled as near as possible to final location.
 Overlap shall be min 15cm and uphill mat shall overlap
downhill mat.
 Overlapping mats shall be tied together with plastic ties
per manufacturer recommendations.
Geogrid Installation

 Geogrid shall not left exposed to sun for long periods.

 Lag between geogrid installation and the next specified

layer shall be max. 14 days.
Conventional Embankment

 Remainder of the embankment shall be constructed in

conventional way of embankment construction, per the
project specifications and approved method statement
for earthwork.
