Chemistry: Identifying Chemical Reactions

Name_____________________________________________________ Date___________________________

Your text book identifies four different types of chemical reactions (section 16-4). Other sources identify as
many as six types of chemical reactions. For now we will stick with the scheme used by your book. The five
types of chemical reactions shown in your book are:

a) Synthesis
b) Decomposition
c) Single displacement or Single replacement
d) Double displacement or Single replacement
e) Combustion

Write balanced equations for each of the word equations below, and then indicate which kind of reaction it is

1. Sodium bromide + Calcium hydroxide Calcium bromide + Sodium hydroxide

Type of reaction = ________________________________

2. Ammonia + Sulfuric Acid Ammonium sulfate

Type of reaction = ________________________________

3. Pentane + Oxygen gas Carbon dioxide + water

Type of reaction = ________________________________

4. Lead(II) + Phosphoric acid Hydrogen gas + Lead phosphate

Type of reaction = ________________________________

5. Lithium nitride + Ammonium nitrate Lithium nitrate + Ammonium nitride

Type of reaction = ________________________________

6. Hydrobromic acid + Aluminum hydroxide Water + Aluminum bromide

Type of reaction = ________________________________

7. Silver nitrate + Calcium chloride Silver chloride + Calcium nitrate

Type of reaction = ________________________________

8. Sodium + Water Sodium hydroxide + Hydrogen gas

Type of reaction = ________________________________

9. Ammonium nitrate Nitrous oxide + Water

Type of reaction = ________________________________

10. Copper(II) oxide Copper + Oxygen gas

Type of reaction = ________________________________

11. Copper + Silver nitrate Silver + Copper(II) nitrate

Type of reaction = ________________________________

12. Hydrochloric acid + Zinc Hydrogen gas + Zinc chloride

Type of reaction = ________________________________

13. Nitrogen gas + Hydrogen gas Ammonia gas

Type of reaction = ________________________________

14. Silver nitrate + Hydrochloric acid Nitric acid + Silver chloride

Type of reaction = ________________________________

15. Copper + Sulfer Copper(I) sulfide

Type of reaction = ________________________________

16. Sodium nitrate Sodium nitrite + Oxygen gas

Type of reaction = ________________________________

17. Heptane + Oxygen gas Carbon dioxide + Water

Type of reaction = ________________________________

18. Silver nitrate + Iron Iron(II) nitrate + Silver

Type of reaction = ________________________________

19. Sodium sulfate + Lead(II) nitrate Lead(II) sulfate + Sodium nitrate

Type of reaction = ________________________________

20. Some of the reactions on this worksheet produced water as one of the reaction products. What similarities
and differences do you see between these reactions?

21. A reaction in which a substance reacts with oxygen and produces water as one of the products is often
referred to a s Combustion reaction. Identify the combustion reactions from the reactions shown on this
worksheet.

22. Acid-base (or neutralization) reactions are recognized by the presence of an acid in the reactants, and water
in the products. Identify the acid-base reactions from the reactions shown on this worksheet.

23. Think about the reactions for which we have written ionic equations. Which category of reactions would
they best fit in to? Explain your answer.

Useful information to help you complete this worksheet:

a) formulas for acids can be found on your reference sheet called "Names of Some Common Ions and Acids".
b) Pentane has the formula C5H9O
c) Heptane has the formula C7H16O
d) Pure sulfurs exists in its natural state as S8
e) Oxygen gas is molecular oxygen with the formula O2
f) Hydrogen gas is molecular hydrogen with the formula H2
g) Ammonia has the formula NH3
