THESIS PROPOSAL
Abstract

TITLE : PROJECT AGILA (Philippine national space research and development center)
STUDENT NO. : 140-0099
DEGREE : BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN ARCHITECTURE

I. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The Philippines needs to address and embark on developing space technology to keep up for the rest of the world
and address national security issues. There is a need to develop local capabilities, both in terms of human resources
and infrastructure, to sustain space research and development. Developing space technology is highly beneficial
and advantageous for the economy and the nation in the long run. As of now Philippines are facing challenges on
space research and development; The Philippines has no direct access to space (e.g. satellites, launchers etc.),
Despite having two orbital slot allocations, we do not have any satellite in orbit, The country has a very small pool
of trained astrophysicists, space scientists and engineers, No existing full capability to develop rockets and payloads
to high altitudes and outer space, The Philippines is not a signatory to most international space treaties and currently
has no space agency to implement a cohesive space development strategy.
Hopefully last August 8 2019, President Rodrigo Duterte has signed into law the "Philippine Space Act," creating
the Philippine Space Agency to address all national concerns related to space science and technology. Under
Republic Act No. 11363, the Philippine Space Agency, or PhilSA, will be the central government agency addressing
all national issues and activities related to space science and technology applications.
