CONCEPT PAPER
Title: Sports Empowerment: Training Courses for Sports Coaches towards Quality
Coaching

Area of Study: SPORTS

Background of the Study/Rationale

Organized, well-structured youth sports can provide many benefits for students. Positive
benefits that are attained through sports would play an important role not just to the athletes but
as well as to the school. Saint Mary’s College of Catbalogan is widely known to be giving
importance and participative to extra-curricular activities. The domain of sports is one of the
fields where most students engage in.

The institution of St. Mary’s College of Catbalogan has been actively participating in
different sports fests such as the highly anticipated Catbalogan City Athletic Association
(CCAA) and other minor school-representing tournaments. The experiences gained by SMCC’s
student-athletes have been successful in the past years of participation as they are greatly given
adequate physical and financial supports.

In the context of SMCC's sports program, winning outcomes are not often achieved in
spite of all the supports given by the school because official records have it that the representing
athletes of the school in different sport events do not constantly land in podium finishes and end
up in low performances in the past years.

After a careful and keen deliberation, the proponent inferred that the problem with the
school’s sport program is the incompetence of coaches due to unacquaintedness in the field of
sports. It has been observed that the coaches that are tasked to mentor student-athletes are not
professed coaches. Thus, the nonfulfillment of quality and effective coaching approach.

In the field of Sport, the coaching approach used by the coaches plays a vital role
towards the attainment of success. Sport coaches assist athletes in developing their full potential,
they are responsible for training athletes by analyzing their performances, instructing in relevant
skills and by providing encouragement. Coaches simply has the authority to handle every
circumstance that takes place to the athletes. In addition, quality and effective coaching has a
great impact on the level of performance of student-athletes.

Statement of the Problem

Literature Review

Will Hinch posted an article on Pitchero Blogs on 10th of August 2016 about what
makes a good sports coach. Hinch stated that as a coach, you're responsible for assembling a
match winning team worthy of excelling as a unit and individually. It is about giving your
knowledge and commitment to a group of players in order for them to improve their skills on the
pitch. But as a coach, constantly evolving your own skills can be just as important as those you
train. Identifying and addressing the gaps in your coaching repertoire allows you to impart better
knowledge on your players, improving their skills and making you a better, more efficient coach.

“A team’s success is mostly measured by the overall amount of victories; yet winning
is only a single measure of success, of which there are many. Another true form of success is
when there is a good team spirit and the group work together, and for each other, efficiently
towards the common goal. It is known that teams with a great bond of unity and strong sense of
togetherness have better chances of conventional success in the form of victories. Effective
coaching can make a tremendous contribution towards this ideal of togetherness. Coaching is
not, and should not, be only limited to the training of a player, but must also involve the analysis
of each individual player’s strengths, weaknesses and overall potential in order to prepare them
for assigned role in the formula of a winning team. The role of a sports coach is varied from
instructor, demonstrator, friend, mentor and an endless fountain of wisdom and knowledge.” –
Ashley Warren, 2017

On the other hand, Brian T. Gearity published a study regarding Poor teaching by the
coach: a phenomenological description from athletes' experience of poor coaching. This
research has examined the coaching behaviors athletes prefer and their satisfaction with the
coach. While this research consistently suggests athletes prefer coaches to exhibit behaviors
related to training and instruction. In conclusion the poor teaching of the coach represented the
multiple ways athletes' perceived the coach to be poor at providing useful instruction,
individualizing that instruction, managing game tactics, and being unknowledgeable about the
skills and qualities to teach effectively that result to unhelpful, insubstantial, and was
detrimental to successful athletic performance.

Project Design

The selected coaches in different sport events would undergo to several training
courses that will help them hone themselves into competent, quality, and knowledgeable
coaches. These coaches would be given introduction about the respective sport events they are
tasked in and they would be given aid towards managing student-athletes. They are expected to
acquire knowledge, tactics and game strategies that would greatly help in handling circumstances
within competitions. Coaches would be acquainted to different sport situations and how to
control them amidst the occurrences of environmental factors.

The coaches would undergo to 3 sets of training courses in a span of 1 school year.
Every set of training course would take up to 1 week full of seminars, conferences and
symposiums. The first set of training course will be held on the 2nd week of August in
preparation to the school’s Intramurals. The second course is expected to be held on the last
week of October to establish readiness in Catbalogan City Athletic Association (CCAA) and the
last course would be conducted on January for upcoming school-representing competitions.

This would greatly benefit in the empowerment of athletes of St. Mary’s College of
Catbalogan to elevate the level of competitiveness and to improve the state of their performance.

Project’s Needs and Costs

The Training Courses for Coaching Project would be in need of training materials and
human resources. The project’s needs and cost are as follows:

of Catbalogan in regards to the level of performance of the students-athletes.
