Yellow Star Thistle Characteristics

Centaurea solstitialis Appearance: Yellow flowers with sharp spines on

the base; dark green stems
Size: 6''-60'' tall
The Yellow Star Thistle is one of the
Location: Along Mt. Diablo Scenic Blvd.
most invasive plant species in the world
Season: Year-round; flowers in late spring
and are often a weed. The thistle
originated from Eastern Europe and was
introduced to the United States in 1893
from Chile. They decrease biodiversity
by pushing out the native species when
they begin to grow. This hurts the entire
ecosystem and can lead to extinction of
species. Found across America, but most common in California and Washington, the yellow star
thistle prefers sun light and dry, open, disturbed areas, a common habitat on Mt. Diablo.
