Outcrops in La Paz
• Objectives:
• Training of identification of components
(clasts), composition
• Development of ideas (HCl probing)
• Routine development: how to describe an
outcrop
• Small profile
Outcrops in the Altiplano
• Stop 1: Simple rock description
Description of an outcrop with definition of
lithotypes and identification of sedimentary
structures along the road
Description of a recent geological feature

Both with respect to petroleum plays

Extraordinary features
• Weathering
• River system
• Stop 2: Simple rock description
Description of an outcrop with definition of
lithotypes along the road
Extraordinary features
• Volcanic rocks
• Contact fault
• Lithology changes
Stop 3: Mapping
• Main objective is to map a hill

finding contacts
identifying of lithotypes
measuring dip and strike
Extraordinary features
• fossils
Geological checklist for fieldwork
• Basic data: where, what etc.
• Rock types
• Others (no order):
• Grain size
• Grain forms
• Minerals if possible
• Bed thickness
• Lamination?
• Sedimentary structures: cross-bedding – grading – marks
• Look at the bottom of the layers
• Soft or hard? – hammer test
• Porosity-permeability
• Cleavage?
• Faults
• Folds
• Dip and strike
• Up and down? – old and young
• Color
• Color outside – color inside (without weathering)
• Fractures – measuring of those
• HCl- carbonate or not
• Do I have photos with scale?
• Do I have hand samples
• Did I number well ?
Personal checklist for the fieldwork
• Hat
• Fieldbook – hard cover
• Pencil – or pen
• Permanent marker: fine and thick: black or blue
• Back pack (mochila)
• Water bottle
• Food
• Sun cream
• Sun glasses
• Camera
• Good scale (money coin –hammer)
• Boots
Field report
• A short intro: §Several outcrops in La Paz and …. Have been visited to learn how to ....’
• Day 1: Stop 1 etc.
• Every outcrop: scan of sketch, photos, basic info, organised according to rocks:
• Rock 1: color, hardness, type, minerals, grain size-form, matrix, folded, faulted, bed thickness,
structures
• Rock 2: etc.....
• Map: hand in the map overlain the satellite photo
description of the rocks and a short text of the geological situation:
At X town, five lithologies have been found, the oldest… the youngest.... – if you don’t
know what is what say it....
The description – reference of elements used in your map – a rock legend from old
bottom to young top – not vice versa
Devide in: geology (lithotypes and their basic characteristics and contacts) – structure –
depositional environment
Finally: what you think you ahve learnt during the three days
If you have references then use them according to the journal ‘Sedimentology’

Hand-in: at latest 1.9. 2018 per email as pdf or on drop boxs – font 12 – 1.5 spaced – not ore
than 2 cm border – every figure a caption (a text) with clear numbering according to the time of
referencing or referring to it during the text – no figure shall exist which is not referred to – only
full sentence: Fiug. 3: Sandstone of the Ordovician succession at XY, ote the red weathering color.
NOT: Fig. 5: Caliza. – Every photo in the filed or in a laboratory with scale
