Electric Fan's technology leader Roger Clemente has new ideas for “cooling off” modern heat producers. e International Review of dustrial Vehicle Design + See page 188 Reprinted from a feature article in IVT '98 (Industrial Vehicle Technology) Magazine. INDUSTRIAL VEHICLE TECHNOLOGY ’98 Cooling concepts on the horizon Modern off-highway vehicles place an overwhelming demand for advanced design cooling systems that can ensure maximum operating efficiency. Such complex systems must be able to effectively cool a number of different fluids. The use of electric and hydrat fan assemblies on traditional heat exchangers will provide an effective alternative in the design of cooling ‘systems that will reduce noise and emissions and increase overall performance Roger Clemente he cooling systems ofthe past ‘become very primitive when adapted to toay’s modem engines, since anufacturers are now required 10 design complicated cooling systems to control the temperature of many figs, including water, of freon, charged airand even diesel fuel Such sophisticated cooling requirements n Engineenng, USA can phe an overwhelming demand on all ypes lof eleven fan ystems, including on/off assembles, since they can consume up (0 15, pet cent of the engine's avaiable horsepower ‘when operating at high peak loads Another drawback that they reduce ‘overall performance and efficiency, because such fn assemblies have great dificuly in correctly monitoring and maintaining the ‘multiple operating temperature levels of radiator when combined with the many other diferent rypes of heat exchangers necessary’ to support other engine functions. Obviously each assembly has ts own unigue cooling requirements For example, a airconditioning ‘condenser may requir fn operation wile other systems do not. It sno longer practical to use a singe fan system to property coo! an assortment of heat exchangers that are grouped together. For many years, these traditional systems found on both stationary and mobile applic INDUSTRIAL VEHICLE TECHNOLOGY ’98 These assembles, which operate only when, necessary, from the 12 oF 24V electrical sy- tem, have proven their mei inthe aftermae ket and are now rapidly gaining gecogntion from various manufacturer, The advantages of electric fs ae ‘numerous, When wsed on many-aixlary applications, elec fans can provide auditional allow to prevent overheating supplement the existing beitdriven fan as ‘new means to control unacceptable noise levels and ai in the redesign ofthe engine ccompartnent by relocating heat exchangers, (On select primary cooling applications lect fans with an adequate capacity may Ee oe ako be used 10 replace the conventional belt tions have remained virally system (Figure 2).
