7. MATERIAL RECEIVING & HANDLING

 Be careful not to scratch on wall of the shell, especially in the sealing area
inboard of locking segment groove near the end.
 Never lift or move a vessel by placing anything inside it. The vessel is
durable and ideally suited to its purpose, but careless handling can
permanently damage it.
 Do not drop vessel or allow it to hit hard on the ground or against other
objects.
 Do not apply improper stress to shell.
 Before lifting the vessel use proper padding to avoid the damage on the
shell. Severe scratches or gouging of the vessel can result in failure of the
vessel wall.
 Avoid direct contact between steel and vessel.
 Do not allow undue stress to act on the Feed/ Concentrate port, which
might cause impact damage to the port area, leading to leakage. Do not
use the Feed/Concentrate port or the permeate port as a tool to lift the
pressure vessel or as a support to manifolds. Manifolds should be self-
supporting.

8. Preparation for Installation

The supervisor shall check for the following items;

Appearance of equipment for damage if any,

 Check orientation marking on the vessel.
 Check the lifting points.
 Oil and foreign matters stuck on the surface of vessels should be
removed before installation.

9. CODES AND STANDARDS

The below standards are referenced throughout this document

 ASME X ASME / Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.

 ANSI 61- Drinking Water System Components – Health Effects.
 ASTM A380-06 - Standard Practice for Cleaning, Descaling and
Passivation of Stainless Steel Parts, Equipment and Systems.
 ASTM A240/A240M- Standard Specification for Heat-Resisting
Chromium-Nickel Stainless Steel plate, Sheet and Strip for Pressure
Vessels.

10. Mounting shell

This section is concerned with the mounting of pressure vessels.
 Provide adequate platform for servicing at both ends of vessel. Elements are
installed from the upstream end (feed), pushed through towards the
downstream end and eventually removed from the downstream end.
 Position each vessel on its mounting frame such that it is centered between
headers.
 It is important that each vessel be placed to minimize any unnecessary strain
on piping that connects a vessel to a header. Normally each vessel should be
centered in the frame with the feed and concentrate ports positioned such that
piping connections can be made easily, without undue strain at each end of
the vessel.
 Mount vessels on rubber saddles (provided with the vessel) positioned in line
with predrilled frame holes.
 Do not mount vessel rigidly, restricted expansion can result in damage to the
vessel.
 Place mounting straps over vessel with plastic strip against vessel.
 Position screw through the frame mounting holes into strap nuts and run up to
the frame finger tight.
 Using a wrench, tighten mounting bolts one additional full turn. To avoid
damage to vessel shell, DO NOT over-tighten mounting nuts.
11. Piping connections
The following are suggested guidelines to ensure that the vessel is
allowed to expand and is easily serviced:
 Support the header and interconnecting piping in a manner that they
are self-supporting.
 Connecting piping alignment to feed, concentrate and permeate ports
should not exceed 0.030 inch (0.762 mm) misalignment.
 Piping connections to the vessel’s feed /concentrate ports should be
via flexible IPS grooved Coupling.

12. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

Sidewall Ported RO pressure vessels are designed for continuous long
term use as housings for reverse osmosis membranes. Typically, the pressure
rating, overall length and total number of vessels is determined by calculations used
during membrane element section. Vessels are installed into a system frame that
provides the recommended support points and then strapped snugly to the frame
using provided mounting hardware. Vessel installation and piping connections
should allow for expansion due to change in temperature and pressure in both length
and diameter as the vessel is operated. During maintenance, it may be necessary to
remove a pressure vessel from a bank for repair or replacement. Sufficient space
must be available for this to happen. Care must be taken in installation and in
removal of the vessels to not damage the shell. Damage to the shell can result in
explosive head failure of the vessel and possible injury to personnel. Vessels and
supports shall be designed to withstand seismic loads and pressures seen

From the High pressure feed pumps. Those vessel components in contact with the
product stream shall be suitable for use with drinking water and meet requirements
NSF/ANSI 61 Drinking Water Components – Health Effects.

 Vessels must be installed correctly to ensure safe use and long service
life.
 Check that vessels mounted on horizontal support frame using compliant
black urethane saddles; hold-down straps snug, not tight.
 Check that each vessel is free to expand under pressure; shell is not
clamped rigidly in place; piping vessel ports not connected using rigid
connections.
 Check that each vessel does not support any other component.
 All the vessels are of different capacities, they shall be clearly marked for
erection.
