Highway hypnosis, also known as white line fever, is an altered mental state in which a person can drive

a car, truck or other automobile great distances, responding to external events in the expected, safe and
correct manner with no recollection of having consciously done so.[1] In this state, the driver's conscious
mind is apparently fully focused elsewhere, while seemingly still processing the information needed to
drive safely. Highway hypnosis is a manifestation of the common process of automaticity, where the
conscious and subconscious minds are able to concentrate on different things.[2]

Highway hypnosis commonly occurs when driving on open highways for an extended period of time. In
this condition, the driver operates the vehicle in a dulled, drowsy, trance-like state. Always be aware of
your surroundings and to avoid falling asleep behind the wheel, take frequent breaks. If possible, avoid
driving for long periods of time and stop if you begin to feel tired.
