As an important part of the discrete manufacturing industry, ABB produces and sells products in many different geographies and is legally
obligated to comply with various material compliance regulations like: Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals
(REACH) Regulation, Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive, etc.
❑ To ensure our products are compliant, we have to ensure that the parts we buy from our business partners are compliant. As our business
partners, we expect you to provide us compliance information on these requests.
❑ ABB has partnered with Assent Compliance Inc. to use their system and services to collect and process material information of our products
and parts.
❑ The aim of this program is to ensure the products produced by ABB are compliant with important regulations and the law of the land.
ABB Policy: ABB has a duty to ensure that the materials we use do not contribute to environmental degradation or lead to conflict and
exploitation in the countries that produce them. To maintain high social, environmental and human rights standards, this duty is set out in
our Policy on Health, Safety, Environment, Security and Sustainability as well as our Supplier Code of Conduct.

Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals
▪ The REACH Regulation (EC 1907/2006) has been in

effect in the European Economic Area (EEA) since 2007.
▪ Goal: To protect people and the environment from
potentially harmful chemical substances.
▪ Requires the reporting of chemical composition of
articles.

What Are SVHCs Under the REACH Regulation?
REACH Candidate List
▪ Initial watch list of substances.

▪ Articles (products) containing SVHCs above the 0.1 percent weight by weight (w/w)
threshold level require actions (safe use guidance and/or declarations).
▪ The “Once an Article, Always an Article” ruling changed reporting needs to identify
substances in use at the lowest piece part level.
▪ Updated twice a year.
▪ There are currently 201 defined entries.

Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive
▪ EU RoHS refers to the original RoHS Directive 2002/95/EC and Directive 2011/65/EU (June 8, 2011).
▪ EU RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU (also known as EU RoHS 2 or RoHS Recast) replaced the original RoHS
Directive as of January 2, 2013.
▪ EU RoHS 10 Substance Amendment Directive amended Directive 2011/65/EU to add four substances to the
current six restricted substances.

EU RoHS 10 Substances Amendment Directive (EU) 2015/863
Amendment to EU RoHS 2 Directive added four specific phthalate substances that will become restricted above a
specific threshold from July 22, 2019.
Original six substances (2011/65/EU): Additional four substances ((EU) 2015/863):

▪ Lead(Pb) : 0.1 percent ▪ Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP): max 0.1
percent
▪ Mercury: 0.1 percent
▪ Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP): max 0.1 percent
▪ Cadmium(Cd): 0.01 percent
▪ Dibutyl phthalate (DBP): max 0.1 percent

EU REACH
▪ REACH is applicable to all products manufactured and imported into the EU.
▪ REACH covers everything, with candidate list as watch list. Authorisation and Restriction lists being
more controlled
EU RoHS
▪ RoHS is specific to electrical and electronic equipment (EEE)
▪ Under RoHS, if your product type is in scope, then it’s a reverse to REACH: substance is banned
unless you justify the need and get an exemption to enable use until substitution and alternative
substances can be used on the electronics.

Creating a Valid REACH Declaration
Ensure your declaration meets the following criteria:
▪ Company letterhead.
▪ Include the proper REACH Regulation legislative reference.
▪ Include unique reference to parts or products being covered

by the declaration.
▪ Declare compliance status.
▪ Declare substances present, if applicable.
▪ Signed by appropriate individual.
▪ Date of reference.

ABB Timeline Requirements
Do I need to respond?
▪ Yes, all suppliers of products to ABB must provide a declaration.

▪ We request that you provide data within two weeks of our initial request.
▪ If you require more time to obtain information, please let Assent know via email or phone. We are
available at compliancesupport@assentcompliance.com or call 1-877-902-3150
▪ Please note, requests will be sent bi-annually, as the REACH SVHC list typically updates twice a year and we
will require updated information.
