Abstract

‘Sir Gawain and the Green Knight’, a chivalric medieval romance poem, finest Arthurian

romance written by Gawain poet in 14th century. It has very attractive symmetrical, symbolic and

balanced structure. Multiple events occur in pair of two or three. Gawain Knight, a courageous

warrior, set out for a long journey to find himself. Sir Gawain passed through multiple trials,

tough challenges, long journey, accepted and apologized for his sins until his journey to ‘self’

was succeeded. The poet described certain features of heroic character through events like

hunting a deer represented innocence of the Gawain. Every character and event as labelled in

poem described the journey of Gawain to find himself and conquer the theory of ‘self ’. Middle

Ages literature was more focused towards love, romance, sexuality, adventure etc. But Gawain

gave it a new historic literature on the theory of Bible’s concept of ‘self’ and more realized than

past literature. It particularly belongs to medieval literature genre that includes adventurous tale,

religious campaign, downfall knight or lord and rescuing confined lady making it perfect

romantic tale.
