Course: EE 1301 Title: Electrical Machine-II Tutorial No.

Module 1: Synchronous Machines: General principles, Types of SM and steady
Unit:1
state model. Determination parameter. Short circuit ratio, nature of MMF in non-
salient-pole m/c and non-salient pole SM, determination of regulation and different
characteristics
Learning Objective:
After this tutorial, student will be able to calculate the following
1. Field current in order to compensate voltage drop due to armature reaction.
2. Value of synchronous reactance.
3. Value of leakage reactance.
4. Find the regulation and power angle of the machine.
Duration: 1 hour
Objectives:

In this tutorial students are expected to solve the following problem.

Q.1 A 15 MVA, 11.4 kV, star connected alternator gave the following result:
Field current, If(A) 10 19 25 30 40.83 45 50
Induced voltage (Line) KV 9.5 13.25 14.5 15.5 16.8 17.25 17.5
ZPFC (Line) (kV) 0 11.4
Find the

1. Field current in order to compensate voltage drop due to armature reaction.

2. Value of synchronous reactance.
3. Value of leakage reactance.
Q.2 A 1500 kVA, 11 kV, three phase star connected cylindrical rotor alternator has an effective
resistance of 0.7 Ω per phase. The open circuit characteristics and two points on the full load zero
power factor characteristics are given below

Field current, If(A) 40 50 110 140 180

Induced voltage (Line) KV - 6.65 11.87 13.2 14.25
ZPFC (Line) (kV) 0 - - - 11.8
Draw the open circuit characteristics, short circuit characteristics, and complete zero-power-factor
characteristics. Using these characteristics, find the regulation and power angle of the machine when
it is operating under full load with 0.8 power factor (lagging).
