Spiders
Spider, the eight-legged freak, can make your blood run cold and why not, they look fearsome. However, these creatures are mostly
harmless to humans. Spider are not insects. They are arachnids, a kind of joint-legged invertebrate animals. Almost all arachnids are
arthropods and spiders are no exception as they also have eight legs.
Spiders are found everywhere except Antarctica and so far more than 45000 species have been found by scientists. Spiders can vary
in sizes from tiny Patu digua to biggies like Goliath Bird Eater Tarantula. Except for eight legs, four eyes of spiders make them
unique. Some spiders like tarantulas have hair on their body.
Almost all spiders are predators. They have eight legs which inject venoms. They have sharp teeth or fangs. They spin webs out of
silk which is used to trap insects. Most spiders eat insects but some spiders can eat lizards, birds and even small mammals. While
some spins web to trap the prey others hide in holes and jump on their prey when they move in. Big spiders like tarantulas use such
trapdoors. Wolf spiders or jumping spiders on the other hand jump on their prey, kill them with fangs and eat them.
Spiders look scary and many of us dread them. Scientists have even named this fear as arachnophobia. However, not all spiders are
harmful. In fact, most of them are harmless to humans. Some spiders like black widow are however poisonous and are harmful.
While venom of some spiders is harmful, scientists are researching to use it for medicinal purposes. Spider's silk is another item of
interest for scientists. It is actually a protein fibre spun by spiders. Its considered amazing for its strength. The strength of spider's
silk can be compared with a steel wire of same thickness.
