work.

General:

1. If the depth of the pit is less than one meter and if you can maintain 1 m width for walkway, then no barrication is required for the inner pits.
Overall barrication is sufficient, provided all the workmen should be explained about the hazards in that area. If 1 m width cannot be
maintained between the pits, then go for mass excavation with adequate angle of repose.

Mass excavation

2. If depth of the pit exceeds 1 m, then maintain adequate angle of repose and do barrication around the pit. After barricading the pit, the width of the walkway should be at
least one meter. Otherwise go for mass excavation with adequate angle of repose and proper access.

Walk Walk

2m
3m

Reason for why we should go for mass excavation:

 The small vertical slab of earth may collapse on either side.

 Width of the access between the pits may get reduced because of side collapse.
 We can’t stack the rebar & formwork material on small access between the pit.
 Excavated earth may get dumped on the small access between the pit.
 There will be no space for keeping PDB, dewatering pump, etc.
 Workmen should get access within every 30 meters. So go for mass excavation, if walkway cannot be maintained.
 If you want to keep the PDB and formwork material then maintain the width of the walkway for 3 m. If width cannot be maintained, then go for mass excavation.
