ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The researcher would like to thank her parents, Bonifacio M. Ladaga and

Corazon C. Ladaga, for buying the necessary materials and resources needed for the

experiment of this Science Investigatory Project. She would also like to express her

deepest gratitude to her teachers, Ms.Rubie May Maurillo, her Science Teacher, and Ms.

Melissa Cuizon, her Mathematics Teacher, for guiding her throughout this whole

undertaking through effective advices and necessary amendments and modifications

which made this study successful. And lastly, the researcher would like to give thanks

to the Almighty Father for giving her hope that she can finish this study safely and

successfully.

Abstract

The researcher came up with this study because it

aims to know the comparison between a Potato
(SolanumTubersum) and Lemon (Citrus Limon) on which
can produce more electricity or electrolytes. The
objectives of this study is to find an alternative way in
creating batteries, and to compare the
SolanumTubersum and Citrus Limon as an alternative
source of electrolytes. The independent variable in the
study are the SolanumTubersum and the Citrus Limon.
While the dependent variable, is the electrolytes. Based
on the data gathered and the interpretation of the data
through the one-way Arithmetic Mean, there is a
significant difference in the use of SolanumTubersum and
Citrus Limon as an alternative source of electrolytes. With
this research, it could help the community in finding the
best alternative in creating a battery that could produce a
bunch of electrolytes enough to be useful on their daily
lives.

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The researchers came up with this study because nowadays glues are very

expensive and many students can’t afford to buy strong glue which is used in projects

and assignments. Especially for students who need glue immediately and they have no

time to buy, instead of buying, they can now make their own glue made of those

ingredients whom you can see in your kitchen, malls and stores.

Glue can be made from plant or animal parts, or it can be made from oil-based

chemicals. The first glues may have been natural liquids that come out of trees when

they are cut. Later, people learned to make glue by boiling animal feet, cartilage or

bones. It's also the key ingredient in most animal glues, as it can be made into a

gelatin that's sticky when wet but hardens when it dries. The word collagen actually

derives from the Greek kolla, meaning glue, and the suffix -gen, meaning producer. As
large, muscled animals, horses contain lots of this glue producer. So the Researchers

have decided to make a homemade glue to prevent the slaughter of animals or to use

animal parts and to use no trees just to make glue.

One of the better-known vegetable-based glues is made from gum arabic

derived from the sap of the acacia tree. Synthetic "glues" or adhesives are

generally made from a combination of polyvinyl acetate (PVA), water, ethanol, acetone

and other substances. Some of the glues are not made out of animal parts. Just like

Elmer’s glue. Elmer's does not make glue from horses or use animals or animal

parts. Our products are made from synthetic materials and are not

derived from processing horses, cows or any other animals. Although there are many

ingredients used to make glue, most formulas contain something called polymers

Natural adhesives are made from organic sources such as vegetable starch

(dextrin), natural resins, or animals (e.g. the milk protein casein and hide-based

animal glues). These are often referred to as bio adhesives. One example is a simple

paste made by cooking flour in water

Statement of the Problem

The main concern of this study is to make an alternative glue made out of

Vinegar, flour, salt, and sugar. It aims answer the following questions:

 Does the Potato (SolanumTubersum) produces more electrolytes than theLemon

(Citrus Limon)?
 Does the Lemon (Citrus Limon) produces more electrolytes than the

Potato(SolanumTubersum)?
Conceptual Framework

Independent Variable Dependent Variable

Vinegar, flour, salt, and

Glue
sugar

Figure 1.1 shows the variable of the study. It illustrates that the Potato

(SolanumTubersum) and Lemon (Citrus Limon) as the independent variable of the

study, because this is the variable which remains constant within the experiment

of the study. On the other hand, the electrolytes are the dependent variables of

the study, because these are the variables that change accordingly to the

independent variable of the experiment.

Hypothesis

Null: There is no significant difference in the use of Potato (SolanumTubersum) and

Lemon (Citrus Limon) as an alternative source of electrolytes.

Alternative: There is a significant difference in the use of Potato (SolanumTubersum)

and Lemon (Citrus Limon) as an alternative source of electrolytes.

Significance of the Study

The significance of this comparative study is the importance of finding which of

the two variables contain or produces much amount of electrolytes. Also it aims to find

nor create an alternative battery for electronic devices, by this it can help the

community through knowing which variable can produce much more electrolytes and it

can be used as a battery to recharge their electronic devices. And lastly, it can save

more electricity and much more money.

Scope and Limitations

This study will be conducted in a certain place which is Brgy. 34-D, Padre Gomez

St. Davao City, and probably it will be conducted in some areas only. Though this study

is said to be extremely economical, and it has been approved as practical to be used in

our everyday life.

Definition of Terms
 Potato (SolanumTubersum) – is a starchy, tuberous crop from the perennial

nightshade SolanumTuberosum. The word “Potato” may refer either to the plant

or to the edible tuber.

 Lemon (Citrus Limon) – is a species of small evergreen tree in the flowering

plant family Rutaceae, native to Asia. The tree’s ellipsoidal yellow fruit is used for

culinary and non-culinary purposes throughout the world, primarily for its juice,

which both culinary and cleaning uses. The pulp and rind (zest) are also used in

cooking and baking. The juice of the lemon is about 5% to 6% citric acid, which

gives sour taste. The distinctive sour taste of lemon juice makes it a key

ingredient in drink and foods such as lemonade and lemon meringue pie.

 Electrolytes – is a substance that produces an electrically conducting solution

when dissolved in water. Electrolytes carry a charge and are essential for life. All

higher forms of life needs electrolytes to survive.
