WHEREAS, D.A.

King has a long history of derogatory public comments towards the immigrant
community; and

WHEREAS, Gwinnett County is widely known for being a diverse and inclusive community
where people of all backgrounds and heritage seek education, jobs, economic opportunity, and
world-class community amenities; and

WHEREAS, Gwinnett County has a significant immigrant population and many Gwinnettians
are the descendants of immigrants. Anti-Immigration rhetoric has no home in our county and a
purveyor of hate should not be elevated to a public platform; and

WHEREAS, Sheriff Conway brought shame on the reputation of Gwinnett County by inviting
D.A. King to represent the sheriff’s department and his hateful views at a sanctioned county
event at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center hosted by Commissioner Fosque; and

WHEREAS, Sheriff Conway has broken the public trust of Gwinnett County residents,
particularly immigrants and people of color and his recent actions call into question the Sheriff
Department’s ability to fairly pursue justice and serve the community; and

WHEREAS, Sheriff Conway has provided neither an apology nor a satisfactory explanation for
his decision to have the leader of an identified hate group speak on his behalf and has only
provided public and private support for D.A. King.

Now, therefore, be it resolved that the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners —

(1) believes that immigrants and their descendants have contributed to the success of Gwinnett
County, are assets to our community and that those who take the oath of citizenship are every bit
as American as those whose families have lived in the United States for many generations;

(2) strongly condemns Sheriff Butch Conway’s decision to handpick D.A. King to speak on his
behalf and represent the taxpayer-funded sheriff's department at a county event that was intended
to bring people together and hold a good faith discussion on the 287(g) program, not devolve
into insulting immigrants and our diverse communities; and

(3) will commence a formal investigation of Sheriff Butch Conway’s links to the Dustin Inman
Society and any other white nationalist hate groups, along with their role in shaping any
departmental policies as sheriff.
