Korg Kronos 73/88 – Correcting Double Triggering Updated 3/22/2013

Problem
A small percentage of Kronos 73 and 88 users have complained that while playing soft passages,
notes will cutoff or sound twice.

Solution
This issue can be corrected by replacing the rubber contact strips with a redesigned type. The
operating system should also be updated to version 1.5.2 (or later). This OS update adds an
option to the diagnostic mode that allows you to select a new keybed setting (KDP1) which will
fine tune the velocity settings to match the mechanics of the modified keybed

Please note: This replacement is only for customers who are experiencing the issue. We will not
be supplying these parts as a preventive measure. Korg will no longer be supplying a full keybed
replacement for this issue.

Ordering and Preparing the Contacts

The part number and name for the replacement contact strips are:
500422008889 RH-3E RUBBER SW 12KEY (Covers one 12 note section)
500422008890 RH-3E RUBBER SW 4KEY (Covers the lowest four notes on an 88 key)

If you are repairing an 88-note Kronos, you will need to order seven of the 12 note contact
strips and one of the 4 note contact strips.

If you are repairing a 73-note Kronos, you will need to order seven of the 12 note contacts
strips. Two of these strips will need to be trimmed to provide the contacts for the highest four
notes, and the lowest nine notes. Please refer to the attached documents for trimming
instructions. When trimming, please make sure the contact strip is oriented to match the diagram
(oval section at the top). If the contact strip is trimmed incorrectly it will not be useable.

Contact Installation Procedure

1. Place the Kronos face down on a soft cushioned surface. The Kronos should be elevated so that
the two joysticks are not pressing against the work bench as this can result in damage.
2. Remove all of the bottom panel screws. You will notice that there are two types. The larger
headed screws are the keybed screws. The other screws serve to tie the bottom panel to the
cabinet.
3. Remove the bottom panel.
4. Remove the contact boards from the keybed.
5. Remove the old contacts and install the new contacts in their place. Take care to install the
contacts with the correct orientation. Looking at the contact strip from above, you will see a
round section and an oval section. The oval sections should be towards the back of the keys.
6. Put the bottom panel back on, leaving the keybed screws a little loose.
7. Turn the Kronos over and hang the front few inches over the edge of your workbench, so that you
can access the front row of keybed screws.
8. Adjust the position of the keybed so that there is a gap of 0.5mm or more between the front bar
and the keys.

9. Tighten the front row of keybed screws to secure the position of the keybed.
10. Turn the Kronos over and tighten the rest of the keybed screws.

OS Update and Keybed Type Setting

If the operating system is version 1.5.2 or greater, follow the Select RH3 Type instructions on
the next page. If you the version is lower than 1.5.2 then you will need to update it to a later
version first.

Updating the OS update will add the ability to select the correct keybed type to fine tune certain
settings to match the mechanics of the modified keybed. This new keybed type should not be
selected on a unit that has an unmodified keybed.

The latest operating system can be downloaded from http://www.korg.com.

Unzip the downloaded file to a location on your computer. (The desktop is a convenient place)
The unzipping process will create a folder in the chosen location. Open that folder.
Inside that folder you should see an instructional PDF file, the OS update files, and a folder
named “mnt”.

Copy the OS files and the “mnt” folder to a USB flash drive.
(The PDF file does not need to be copied to the USB drive, but doing so will not hurt.)

Follow the instructions in the PDF file for updating the operating system and for selecting the
keybed type.

Uneven Key Spacing

Some customers have complained about uneven key spacing on the Kronos. Please check and
correct uneven spacing by following the instructions in the attached document.

Dealing with USB Flash Drive Problems

If the Kronos has trouble seeing your flash drive, the first step is to reformat the drive using your
computer. The drive must be formatted as FAT32.

Some drives come with software preinstalled on a second partition that emulates a CD Drive.
(Microsoft Windows will show an additional CD drive in its list of drives). This partition can
cause problems with the Kronos update. Use a different drive or uninstall the extra partition. This
technology is called “U3”, and usually includes a U3 utility that has an uninstallation option.

Set the “Select RH3 Type” parameter in the diagnostic program

1. Turn the Kronos on.

2. Check that the update has been installed correctly.
Confirm that the correct System Version is shown on the startup screen, or under the Options Info page in the Global mode.

3. Start the diagnostic program by pressing and holding the following front panel buttons.:

[MIXER KNOBS]
[RESET CONTROLS]
4. The diagnostic program will start on the “Fan Control” page.
5. Press the Value Inc [^] button six times to select the “Key & After T” page.
6. Press the [ENTER] Button.
7. Press the [FF>>] Button.
8. A “Not Completed” message will display on the LCD. Touch anywhere on the LCD to clear the
message.
9. Touch the KDP1 box on the LCD. The box will turn green when it is selected.
10. Press the [ENTER] button.
11. The screen will display “Now writing to internal memory…” for a few seconds, after which it
will switch to the Aftertouch page. DO NOT touch the Keybed.
12. Turn the Kronos off.

The Kronos is now set to “KDP1” mode, and will use the velocity adjustment table for the
KDP RH3 Keybed. This setting is stored in internal memory and will be retained through power
on/off cycles, future system updates, and DVD restore operations.
How to correct white key gap irregularity.

1, In case of such sample.

2, Please prepair (-)minus driver.

3, Insert the minus driver into the narrow gap like this photo slowly.
4,Insert deeply and slowly like this.

5,After inserting the driver into some narrow gap, the appearance will be fine.

* Please do not insert the driver quickly, It has the possibility that a key breaks.
* Please adjust the driver inserting depth by the confirmation of the appearance.
