ELECT 871 Project topics

(Due before the final exam day)

General guidelines:

Each project should be about 10 single-line typed pages including figures. Figures should
be embedded in the document. You should pick the topic and read the available
literature and then tackle the problem chosen. Proper illustrations are a must. You
should follow some good guidelines for writing journal papers (for example American
Institute of Physics guidelines). If you have doubts regarding something you can also ask
me for suggestions.

Topics:

1. Scaling of Si MOSFETs

2. Heterostructure devices: advantages and challenges

3. Design aspects of AlGaN/GaN HEMTs for microwave power amplification

4. Comparison of SiC MESFETs and AlGaN/GaN HEMTs for microwave power

amplification

5. Design of UV emitters (LEDs and Lasers)

6. Design of UV detectors

Grading criteria:

1. Background study (15%)

2. Presentation of the technical material (35%)
3. Problems with current approach and possible improvements (15%)
4. Oral presentation for 15 mins (~12 slides) (35%)

Note: Coherence of the entire material is important. Do not just throw statements all
over.
