Oceania is ruled by Big Brother with a totalitarian society in permanent war, currently

against Eurasia. The Party controls people’s history, language and individuality. They
aim at keeping the proletariat without education and possibility of capital accumulation.

Winston works in the Ministry of Truth rewriting history. One day, he commits the crime
of falling in love with Julia, committing "sexcrime". But they are captured by the Thought
Police and Winston is interrogated and brainwashed by O'Brien. He tortures Winston in
Room 101, faced with his deeper fear, rats.

Finally, Winston and Julia are turned back into members of the Party.
