2.6) Figure P2 .6 shows a pavement structure composed of the following three layers : 5 .75 in .

HMA with
elastic modulus 400,000 psi, 23 in granular base with elastic modulus 20,00 0 psi, and a subgrade with elastic
modulus 10,000 psi . All layers are assumed to have a Poisson ratio of 0.5 . Calculate the maximum horizontal
tensile strain at the bottom of HMA and the maximum vertical compressive strain on the top of subgrade under
a 40,000-lb wheel load and 150-psi contact pressure, assuming that the contact area is a circle. [Answer : -7 .25
x 10-4 ,1 .06 X 10 -3]

2.6 If the deflection at the center of a rigid plate is found out to be 0.03 in. from a load on a subgrade with
Poisson’s ratio of 0.35, what is the estimated modulus of the subgrade? Consider a load of 9000 lb and plate
radius of 6 in.

2.8 Use a layered elastic analysis program to determine the radial stresses at the bottom of the surface layer
directly under the load for a pavement with three layers as follows:
2.8 Use un programa de análisis elástico en capas para determinar las tensiones radiales en la parte
inferior de la capa superficial directamente debajo de la carga para un pavimento con tres capas de la
siguiente manera:

Consider all layers to be stress insensitive.

Consider three different cases of loads as follows:
