ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS

1. What is the significance of screening?

According to an online article published by Satyendara (2015) entitled

“Screening of Materials and Types of Screens”, screening is the process of solid

separation on the basis of their size. The objective of screening is size regulation, to

separate granular substance particles smaller than the screen openings from the particles

that are larger.

The article also states one importance of screening which is scalping. Scalping

is the process of removing unwanted oversized particles and feed contaminants such as

twigs, glass, and many more. Another online article, entitled “Screening 101”, screening

is done to produce a product with a desired particle distribution or characteristics, split a

feed stream to separate processing lines, remove fines, and remove finished product prior

to an additional reduction step. Additionally, in wastewater treatment plants, screening

is done to prevent damaging the pumps and equipment.

2. Give examples of industries in which screening is very useful.

As aforementioned, the feed in wastewater treatment plants must be coarse-

solids free as to prevent damages in their equipment therefore, screening is essential. The

cement industry also requires screening as to comply with size standards or to comply

with a customers demands. Screening is also utilized by the mining industry to make final

separation to produce saleable products based on grade or a size range.

3. Differentiate aperture, mesh number and screen interval.

According Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, aperture is the diameter of an

opening; or the size of an opening. On the other hand, mesh number refers to the number

of openings in a screen per linear inch; therefore, the lower the mesh number, the greater

the screen aperture. Lastly, screen interval refers to the series of arrangement of multiple

screens.
