Overall Goal of the Program

The overall goal of the interdisciplinary masters

program in Disaster Risk Management and Sustainable

Development (DRMSD) is to equip graduates with the

required knowledge and skills to contribute

significantly and positively to both disaster risk

research and disaster risk management in Ethiopia, as

well as to the broader African and international scenes.

The knowledge set to be mastered will include

contemporary concepts, updated frameworks, ever-

evolving policy and institutional networks, cutting-

edge methodology (both qualitative and quantitative)

and management and planning principles. Whatever

their focus, graduates should be well equipped to guide

the future generation of disaster risk management and

sustainable development in research, government, UN

donors and NGO settings across the globe.

Staff Profile

Bahir Dar University, College of Agriculture and

Environmental Sciences, Disaster Risk Management

and Sustainable Development program is lead by an

interdisciplinary staff members from different field of

studies; such as Disaster Risk Science and Sustainable

Development; Development Studies, Environmental

Science; Environmental and Geographical Sciences;

Disaster, Crisis and Risk Management; Development

Economics; Food Security Studies; Entomology;

Sociology, Public Health; Gender and Development

among others.

For specific courses of the curriculum, expertise will

also be drawn from BDU faculties, University of

Arizona, University of Jaume I, Wageningen

University (the Netherlands), Disaster Risk

Management and Food Security Sector and other

governmental and nongovernmental institutions.

Drawing on expertise from a wide variety of

perspectives will assure an education of the highest

quality and one that is currently given the ever-

changing state of international development, disaster

and emergency affairs.

Students’ Profile

Fifteen Master level students will be identified each

year by Bahir Dar University (BDU). These students

will have completed a relevant undergraduate program

and will be both active in and committed to disaster

risk management in Ethiopia. The admission of the

candidates will be gender balanced and represent a

wide range of disciplines. The BDU administration

will assure, to the extent possible, that the student body

is freed from other professional responsibilities and is

able to focus almost exclusively on the courses and

studies for at least the first two semesters.

Admission Requirements

Applicants are required to have a B.A., BSc., or BEd

degree in the social sciences (Sociology, Geography,

Psychology, Economics, Development Management,

Demography, etc…), agricultural sciences ( Rural

Development, Agro Forestry, Natural Resource

Management, Water Resource Management,

Meteorology, Agricultural Extension, Plant Science,

Animal Science, etc), health sciences (Environmental

Health Science, Health Officer, Public Health), or

natural sciences (Biology, Geology, etc)

Applicants should have a CGPA of at least 2. 0and

above in an undergraduate program from any

recognized university/college or faculty.

The candidate must pass entrance examination in the

field of study.

The candidates must be supported by at least three

letters of recommendation preferably from their

under-graduate instructors, employers and

professional associations.

The candidate must meet all other admission

requirements of the School of Graduate Studies

(SGS) of Bahir Dar University.

Course Requirements and Duration of Study

The Masters of Disaster Risk Management and

Sustainable Development program will be a two-year,

four-semester 36-credit hour’s program. All candidates

shall complete all requirements for a Master’s degree

within four semesters of full time enrolment. In

addition, all requirements of the master’s degree must

be completed within two calendar years of initial

enrolment as a Master’s candidate. With the exception

of students in the continuous course work, all are

required to register for four consecutive semesters until

all requirements for the degree have been fulfilled. A

student who does not register is considered to have

withdrawn from the university.

Under exceptional circumstances and with the

recommendation of the graduate program committee, a

student who did not complete the degree requirements

within the maximum time, and who was thus required

to withdraw, may be readmitted only once to complete

those requirements. Final approval for readmission is

by the Graduate, Research and Community Service

Coordination office.

Application Deadlines and Notifications of


Acceptance

Application forms and all relevant documents must be

submitted to the university as per the university

calendar and legislation. Accepted candidates will be

notified by the University Graduate, Research and

Community Service Coordination Office.

Course Assessment and Evaluation

Graduate student progress is assessed regularly and

formally by the Education Program through assigned

instructors and supervisors. Each instructor will grade

the required assessments associated with each course

and will provide a final grade based on the grading

system of the University. It is necessary to maintain an

average of “B” or above in order to move into the

thesis research stage, which is the major requirement

for the MSc degree.

The assessments focus on both completion of

coursework and the development of professional skills

in research, scientific writing and presentation.

Lecturing, Discussion, Group and Individual

Presentation, Report Writing on Assignments and

Home Works, Term Paper Writing

Grading System and Graduation Requirement

The grading system complies with the general

framework of the University grading system.

Moreover, students must score a minimum of 3.00 and

successfully defend thesis work in order to complete the

program and to be eligible for graduation.
