Abstract

ABON, KAREN ANGELIE A. Medical Profile of Glucose-6-

Phosphate-Dehydrogenase (G6PD) Deficient Patients.

The study was conducted in order to understand the respondents’ nutritional

status in relation to having the metabolic disorder Glucose-6-Phosphate-

Dehydrogenase Deficiency. It determines the common effects and manifestations

of the condition so as to determine appropriate recommendations on its

management. The questionnaire used in this study is based from the research of R.

Salacup (2015) which was used to determine the nutritional status of preschool

children.

Their answers on the questionnaire were evaluated using Statistical Package for

Social Sciences (SPSS) where it is highlighted that G6PD can pose serious

implications in the health and nutritional status of affected people. The potential of

the condition to be a predisposing factor to health risks such as anemia and common

illnesses is also very high, as it is with being a factor for having an abnormal

nutritional status because of its role in limiting the body’s ability to metabolize

glucose. The prevalence of stunting, wasting, and being underweight among the

respondents has been evaluated in the study and has shown significant high rates.

The strict observance of precaution in terms of food and drug interactions seems to

have a very big role on managing the condition. These results offer notions for

future research on such topics that are connected to the life of Glucose-6-Phosphate

Dehydrogenase (G6PD) Deficient patients.
