Conrado Lopez, fell in love with a chinese woman named Alice Tan at the age of thirty
which he never knew that would changed his wants in life.
Alice Tan works in a Electric Shop managed by her uncle, where they first met. Conrado
needs to buy some electric wire for his house but he don’t have any idea on how to fix the
electric problem in his house so that Alice instructed him, it was a very first moment that he
fell something towards the girl. After that encounter he always drop by to the Shop just to
see Alice and he don’t mind if he has to buy some electrical supply. Until one day Alice
accosted him about his motives in buying some stuffs in store, he confessed to alice that he
just love talking with her. After that their friendship was bloom they started knowing each
other and they have a place where they would always meet every Sunday. He knew that
alice is already orphaned and she only lived with her uncle and two brother, there where
times that they always argued about something but this made them close to each other.
Even they have a conflict because alice is chinese, conrado don’t mind it. He red anything
about china he also bother to learn mandarin and go to a buddhist temple even he is
protestant. He sure about his feelings towards Alice. He said to alice that he want to marry
her but he discover that Alice is already destined to marry a widow rich man, her family has
a depth of gratitude to this man because he helped his uncle to their business and gave her
brothers a better job. After that he never seen Alice into a shop every time he drop by he
searched every where but Alice was not there. Until he ask Mr. Tan, alice’s uncle, and he
knew that alice is not already working there he also confessed his feelings but Mr. Tan said
that he’s too late. Conrado pestered with question. he decided went to the place where they
always meet, in the park. There he saw Alice walking to a car with a fat, bald chinese, old
enough to be her father. She was big with a child as he looked at Conrado there was this
brief and anguished looked in her face trying to told him not to move, not to speak. When
alice drove away everything was clear to him, the tong that must be paid, the life that must
be warped because it had to be lived.
The conflict of the story is about the nationality of the two lovers. As for Immanuel
Kant perspective, we all have a right to choose on how we lived our life. We have a
choices and our free will sets an obligation to do. We act accordance to our reasons.
If just alice just set a side their depth of gratitude to an old chinese man and choose
to be with Conrado she can attain a real happiness in her life. She wouldn't’t be a
tong that must be paid, because she’s also a woman, she has a right to life, on how
she lived her life. In the story where alice is chinese i understand that they just want
to conserved their race, but alice stated in story that she’s not just a chinese, she’s
also a human being. Where a human has a right to choose.
Free will, only innate with humans. It is the power to choose among alternatives or
on how to act in a particular situation independently. Thomas Hobbes set the stage
for good deal and later thinking about nature of freedom. According to him freedom
is the “absences of the opposition” meaning as long as our actions that we form a
desire to perform are not hindered or prevented by any way some obvious, external
force, we are said to be free. He also didn't base his theory of law and liberty on
freedom as a multiway power but as a rationality. Freedom as a power, liberty as a
right, and liberation as a desirable goal. And for his perspective in a conflict of the
story, Alice has a freedom to make decisions into her life, if she didn't controlled by
her morality and not let this overpower her feelings toward Conrado, she can easily
choose the desire of her heart.
