Oxygen

Overview:
Oxygen is a natural gas.
(It is a colorless, tasteless, odorless gaseous component that
makes up 21% of the environment and is discovered in water, in
most rocks and minerals, and in various organic compounds)
Element's Atomic Number: 8
Element Symbol is O
Name’s Origin: The name originates from the Greek 'oxys' for "sharp, acid" (because
oxygen was believed to be the key constituent in the
formation of acids) and the Greek 'gen or genes' for "forming".

Importance of Oxygen:
a. Life requires oxygen. Without it, only certain forms of plant life can exist among
living organisms.
b. Oxygen is crucial in the decaying process known as oxidation, but it will only
occur in the presence of bacteria. The deceased products are slowly oxidized
and transformed into harmless substances.
c. Oxygen is also used in the therapy of certain illnesses in which the person is
unable to inhale enough air to supply the oxygen required.
Effects of lack of Oxygen:
Lack of oxygen, as experienced in elevated altitudes or in certain diseases, can cause a
range of hypoxia diseases or absence of oxygen. The body's oxygen distribution system
can be disrupted by several poisons, such as cyanide and carbon monoxide.
