CMC-2018 SUBMISSION DATE: 27/10/2018 ASSIGNMENT 4&5

Assignment-4&5 FOR BOYS

1.What is the function of frequency management and how channel assignment is performed?
Explain how the groups of the 666 channels are divided in to subsets.
2. Why handoff is necessary for cellular systems? Determine the types of handoffs based on the
Signal strength and C/I ratio.
3.Write the general formula for call dropped rate and mention the specific conditions for the
interference limited system.
4.Explain about channel sharing and borrowing schemes.
5. How the dropped call rate is related to the capacity &voice quality and obtain the
expression?
6. Calculate the number of set-up channels and voice channels per cell for a cellular system
having a total spectrum allocation of 60 MHz which uses two 25 KHz simplex channels to
provide full duplex set-up and voice channels. Assume that the system is designed with nine
cell frequency reuse pattern and 1 MHz of the total spectrum is exclusively allocated for set-
up channels.
7. A system has 100 cell sites and a call paging has to reach all 100 cell sites. If every page takes
100ms and there are 2000 land originating callers per hour during a busy hour then calculate
the airtime spent for paging during the busy hour?
8. A cellular system is installed with 100 cell-sites employing a frequency reuse factor of 7 and
500 full duplex channels.
(i) How many number of channels per cell are available?
(ii) Calculate the total number of channels available in the entire system.

Assignment-4&5 FOR GIRL STUDENTS

1.Differentiate between the Access channel and Paging channel. Explain how a one setup
channel is used for both paging and access and explain operational techniques?
2. What are the various methods of delaying the handoff? Explain briefly. What is meant by
handoff initiation? Explain the different methods of handoff initiation with suitable diagrams.
3.Explain how different channel allocation strategies maintain the frequency reuse distance,
while borrowing channels from other cells.
4. Explain how to calculate the number of handoffs per call? What are the circumstances where
handoffs are necessary but cannot be made? Explain how a handoff is initiated?
5. What do you understand by non-fixed channel assignment? Describe the corresponding
algorithms. Why the co channel interference is avoided easily in sectorization than in cell
splitting?
6. The US AMPS analog full duplex cellular system is allocated 50 MHz RF spectrum in the
800-MHz range and provides a total of 832 duplex channels. Forty-two of those
channels are designated as set-up channels and the rest are used as voice channels. The
uplink frequency is exactly 45 MHz lesser than the downlink frequency.
i. What is the bandwidth for each channel?
ii. How are channels distributed between the cell-site and the mobile?
iii. Assume a cell-site transmits control information on channel number 150, operating at
874.5 MHz. Compute the transmit frequency of a mobile unit transmitting on this channel.
7. In a system the number of channels at the cell site is 50. The call holding time is 0.022 h. The
number of originating calls attempted per hour is 2,035, and the number of handoff calls
attempted per hour is 32.
Calculate the blocking probability of
a) Originating calls
b) Handoff calls when queuing is done for handoff calls only and the queue size is 4.
8. In a cellular system with a 7-cell cluster, 168 voice channels are available. Determine the
assignment of voice channels to each cell/sector if
(i) Omnidirectional antennas are used at the cell-site
(ii) 3-sector 1200 directional antennas are used at the cell-site
(iii) 6-sector 600 directional antennas are used at the cell-site.
Comment on the results obtained.
