1.What is the article all about?

This article is all about the Summer’s hypothesis that women are not advancing in
science because of innate inability. The author explains what is wrong with this hypothesis and
gave his proof that even women can do in science but sadly our society and culture did not
recognize it because of discrimination. He encourage everyone to speak out and take action
about this, even though it is against in our academic habits. Give them an appreciation in a little
discoveries they give in science and be confident booster.

2. What are the important points that were discussed about gender by the author?

Hypothesis
First is the Summers' Hypothesis that women are not advancing because innate inability
rather than because of bias or other factors. It is a view that seems to have resonated widely with
male, but not female, scientist. The author argue that the available scientific data do not provide
credible support for the hypothesis but instead support an alternative one: that women are not
advancing because of discrimination.

History
History is literally "His-story" since all the achievements of women is not recorded. The
society discourage women from studying math and science from a very young age, there is a
little evidence that gender differences in math abilities exist, are innate or are even relevant to the
lack of advancement of women in science.

Anecdotes, however, are not data, which is why gender-blinding studies are so important. These
studies reveal that in many selection processes, the bar is unconsciously raised so high for
women and minority candidates that few emerge as winners. For instance, one study found that
women applying for a research grant needed to be 2.5 times more productive than men in order
to be considered equally competent. Even for women lucky enough to obtain an academic job,
gender biases can influence the relative resources allocated to faculty, as Nancy Hopkins
discovered when she and a senior faculty committee studied this problem at MIT. The data were
so convincing that MIT president Charles Vest publicly admitted that discrimination was
responsible. For talented women, academia is all too often not a meritocracy.

Discrimination

Few women, as well as men, are willing to admit that there is discrimination in academia.
Despite these studies, very few men or women are willing to admit that discrimination is a
serious problem in science.

Competition

There is no scientific support, either, for the contention that women are innately less competitive
(although I believe powerful curiosity and the drive to create sustain most scientists far more
than the love of competition). However, many girls are discouraged from sports or fear of being
labeled tomboys. A 2002 study did find a gender gap in competitiveness in financial
tournaments, but the authors suggested that this was due to differences in self-confidence rather
than ability.

3. How do you react on these important points?

Sadly to know that it is happened eventhough many equal rights are implemented. In this
article the author reveals the possible reasons why Summer’s hypothesis is wrong and harmful.
On the important points, I know that historically, so many men contributed in science, it is
because women are scared and discouraged by the society and culture in the past and the
discoveries that time are filtered and controlled by the church. And I do not believe that cannot
compete, actually in our time so many things that women wins against men especially in
research.

4. What are your reflections?

In this article I learned that everyone whether is it male or female has an opportunity to do
work with science but there is always discrimination happens. I need it to speak out and be an
example to other, give them a confidence that they can really do. And as a future educator, I’ll
always consider my student ability and talents, to make them confident to all things and also to
make them to respect other students or people. I treat them equally even though they are belong
to LGBTQ+ community and I always give them a equal chance.
