EXPERIMENT NO 5.

To calculate the heat of neutralization of strong acid Vs strong base using calorimeter

Apparatus

Calorimeter with stirrer, thermometer with rough balance.

Procedure

Prepare IM of NaoH & IM of HCL of exact molarities, IM. Out of IM prepared NaoH take
4gm of it, add 100 ml of distilled water, for P preparing approximately IM HCL, take
10ml of conc HSL & dilute it to 100ml with distilled water. Prepare 0.5m oxalic acid by
dissolving 31.5gms of it in 250ml of distilled water. First of all, prepare standard solution
of 1M NaoH by it and then with standard 1M NaoH, prepare 1M HCL of exact molarity.

Take a calorimeter, wash it along with stirrer. Weigh this calorimeter on a rough
balance. Take 50ml of 1M NaoH in it. Note the initial temperature of NaoH by the help of
thermometer.

Add 50ml of 1M HCL in it. There will be a rise in temperature when acid and alkali react
together. Note the rise in temperature of mixture when the temperature stops rising,
weigh the calorimeter and mixture solution. Find out the mass of solution and calculate
the heat of neutralization.

Equation

HCL + NaoH -- NaCl + H2O + 13.88 KCAL

Observation and Calculations

Weight of calorimeter + stirrer = m1 = 56.5g

Add 50ml of 0.5M Acid solution in calorimeter then initial temperature of acid = t1= 21 C

Add 50ml of 0.5M base solution in calorimeter then final temperature of solution = t2=
24 C

Change of temperature = t2 – t1 = 24 C – 21 C

=3C

Weight of calorimeter + solution = m2= 165g

Weight of solution = m3 = m2 – m1 = 108.5g

Specific heat of copper calorimeter = S1 = 0.091

Specific heat of solution = S2= 1

Heat of neutralization = (m1S1 + m2S2) x 1000

M x V x 100

Here, M = morality = 1M

V = Volume = 25ml

Heat of neutralization = (m1S1 + m2S2) x 1000

M x V x 100

= 56.5 (0.091) + 108.5 (1) x 1000

1 x 25 x 1000

Heat of neutralization in Kcal = 1363 Kcal / mol

Heat of neutralization in KJ = J = 1 C = 4.184J

= -13.63 x 4.184

= -57.05 KJ/mol

Result

The heat of neutralization of NaoH and HCL is 57.05 KJ/mol.
