Func tion of the Position:
This is a supervisory management position in whic h the incumbent
applies sc ientific princ iples and prac tical laboratory experienc e to
manage the USP-India’s Synthetics Laboratory and staff. Oversees
daily operation of the laboratory and interactions with other USP
departments, promotes Synthetic s Laboratory programs to rec ruit
c ollaborative/c ore laboratories.

•Proposes annual budgets, and projec ts resourc es, capital and

•Develops and maintains strategic c ontac ts and collaborations with contact USP Human

•Develops work plans and statements of work (SOW) for c ore
laboratories.

•Reviews the Synthetic s Laboratory building plan and makes


necessary rec ommendations based on existing and future testing
needs.

•Partners with HR to rec ruit appropriate scientific staff for the


Synthetic s Laboratory.

•Supervises staff, as assigned. Performs supervisory duties suc h as

Attend a USP Event
•Helps develop SOPs and polic ies and then instructs other staff in
these operational polic ies.

•Reviews as nec essary test reports and USP Reference Standards


Candidate Evaluation Packages (RSCEP), and obtains additional
data as needed.

•Coordinates with Quality Assuranc e staff to ensure the


implementation of correc tive ac tions.

•Acc ompanies other USP-India staff at sales, marketing, and


sc ientific outreac h events, as needed.

•Develops study designs for collaborative studies of new


Synthetic s referenc e standard materials.

•Reviews, edits and approves all reports from the Synthetic s


Laboratory program.

•Provides for the training, development, assignment, and


replac ement of Synthetics Laboratory personnel.

•Assists in the preparation of the US Pharmac opeia and the


National Formulary (USP-NF) as a resourc e on sc ientific questions.

•Represents the Synthetic s Laboratory program at various


sc ientific meetings. Makes presentations at sc ientific meetings and
publishes researc h or position papers.

•Assists in the development and implementation of safety projects


impac ting Synthetic s Laboratory personnel.

•Partic ipates in USP c ross-func tional teams as appropriate.

•Supports and helps improve the USP-India quality management


system.

•Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Requirements:
Ph.D. in Synthetic organic c hemistry, with not less than 10 years
of relevant experience in the development of synthetic proc esses
for organic molec ules in a pharmac eutic al c ompany Must be familiar
with all analytic al tec hniques employed in struc tural eluc idation and
synthesis of organic molec ules suc h as NMR, LCMS, CHNS, TGA,
DSC, preparative HPLC, Flash Chromotography etc .

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:


A c omprehensive understanding of the scienc e involved in the
development of synthetic organic molecules and analytic al
c hemistry. Should have demonstrated experienc e in the design,
development and implementation of synthetic schemes at
ec onomical c ost. Excellent tec hnic al writing and verbal
c ommunic ation skills are required. Good interpersonal skills and
proven ability to func tion in a team-oriented environment are
necessary. Established skills in written and verbal c ommunic ation
are required. Proven leadership and staff management skills are a
must.
