Financial Aid Reflection

1. Federal Financial Aid- What are the different types of federal financial aid available to
students? How do you apply for federal financial aid? What benefits do students receive
from this type of financial aid?
A: Types of federal financial aid available include grant programs, work-study programs,
and student loan programs. You can apply by completing the FAFSA application. Benefits
include educational expenses, tuition fees, and dorm expenses.

2. State Financial Aid- What are the different types of state aid available to students? How
do you apply for state financial aid? What benefits do students receive from this type of
financial aid?
A: State aid available includes grants from a particular state. You can apply by contacting
the state grant agency. They offer similar benefits as federal aid.

3. School Specific Financial Aid- Which schools did you research? Describe one grant or
scholarship that is offered at each school. What benefits do students receive from this
type of financial aid?
A: I researched UCLA and UCSD. UCLA offers the UCLA Achievement Scholarship in
recognition of a student’s academic excellence. This would cover most of my fees and
tuition expenses.

4. Private Scholarships- Describe two scholarships that you found interesting during your
research. What are the benefits of using this type of aid to fund your education?
A: Two private scholarships I researched were the Dell Scholars Program and the GLS
National Foundation. Benefits include money and coverage of certain fees.

5. Military Financial Aid- Do you or your family plan to or have served in the military? If so,
describe at least one military financial aid program that is available to you? What
benefits do students receive from this type of financial aid?
A: My family is not able to serve and I would absolutely never apply or join the military. I
would never accept any help from any military-related programs and I refuse to ever
disclose my information to them.

6. Personal Financial Aid Plan- After reviewing the different types of financial aid available
to students, what plan do you have for covering the costs of post-secondary education?
Write a paragraph that summarizes the total cost you expect to pay for post-secondary
education, the sources of aid you plan to use to cover these costs, and when and how
you plan to apply for each program. You may also need to consider alternate sources of
income such as a college fund or savings plan that has already been set aside.
A: Since I am currently attending a community college, the only significant costs would
be my textbooks and transportation. I have a job that only pays 12 an hour so I plan on
finding another to support myself and any additional costs I may need in the future. If
that doesn’t go as planned, I have other options because school is not for everyone
including myself.
