1 DESCRIPTION
NOTE: DSE advise that a normally closed relay output be used for the closing circuit of the mains
switchgear. Failing to do so may result in the DSE module requesting the mains switchgear to open
momentarily during power up.
This document describes how to configure and wire a DSE module’s outputs to suit a variety of different types of
switchgear and their control circuits.
2 CONTRACTOR COILS
Mains
The DSE module’s output drives the contactor coil via a normally closed contact,
from a slave relay if required.
When the DSE module requires the contactor to be closed, the output is de-
energised which closes the relay contact.
When the DSE module requires the contactor to be open, the output is energised
opening the relay contact.
Generator
The DSE module’s output drives the contactor coil via a normally open contact,
from a slave relay if required.
When the DSE module requires the contactor to be closed, the output is energised
which closes the relay contact.
When the DSE module requires the contactor to be open, the output is de-
energised opening the relay contact.
NOTE: DSE advise against the use of Under Voltage (UV) coils for the opening circuit of the mains
switchgear. Failing to do so may result in the DSE module not reclosing the mains switchgear during a
transient loss of mains supply.
Generator
When the generator starts, the UV coil is powered via the normally closed contact
which enables the close signal to be given. When the DSE module requires the
breaker to be opened, the output is energised for one second which opens the relay
contact, removing the power to the UV coil. This causes the breaker to trip (open)
as the UV is no longer powered. After one second, the output de-energises, closing
the relay contact so it is ready to power the UV coil the next time the generator
starts.
4 CLOSING COILS
4.1 CONTINUOUS SIGNAL
For continuous closing signals (close signal is present continuously when the breaker is closed), follow the instructions
for Contactor Coils.
Mains
The DSE module’s output drives the closing coil via a normally closed contact, from
a slave relay if required.
When the DSE module requires the breaker to be closed, the output is de-
energised which closes the relay contact for 0.5 seconds. After 0.5 seconds, the
output energises, opening the relay contact.
Generator
The DSE module’s output drives the closing coil via a normally open contact, from a
slave relay if required.
When the DSE module requires the breaker to be closed, the output is energised
which closes the relay contact for 0.5 seconds. After 0.5 seconds, the output de-
energises, opening the relay contact.
Mains
The DSE module’s output drives the opening/shunt trip coil via a normally open
contact, from a slave relay if required.
When the DSE module requires the breaker to be open, the output is energised
which closes the relay contact.
When the DSE module requires the breaker to be closed, the output is de-
energised closing the relay contact.
Generator
The DSE module’s output drives the opening/shunt trip coil via a normally open
contact, from a slave relay if required.
When the DSE module requires the breaker to be open, the output is energised
which closes the relay contact.
When the DSE module requires the breaker to be closed, the output is de-
energised closing the relay contact.
Mains
The DSE module’s output drives the opening/shunt trip coil via a normally open
contact, from a slave relay if required.
When the DSE module requires the breaker to be closed, the output is energised
which closes the relay contact for one second. After one second, the output de-
energises, opening the relay contact.
Generator
The DSE module’s output drives the opening/shunt trip coil via a normally open
contact, from a slave relay if required.
When the DSE module requires the breaker to be closed, the output is energised
which closes the relay contact for one second. After one second, the output de-
energises, opening the relay contact
NOTE: Not all DSE controllers have the Close to N Output output source available. For controllers
without the Close to N Output output source, contact DSE Technical Support for more details:

These devices use a motorised rotary mechanism to switch between two or three positions which are usually labelled
as the Source 1 (Mains), Source 2 (Generator) and Off (Neutral) position. An example of this type of device is the ABB
OTM series.
Mains (S1)
The DSE module’s output drives the closing signal via a normally closed contact,
from a slave relay if required.
When the DSE module requires the switch to changeover to S1, the output is de-
energised which closes the relay contact for 0.5 seconds. After 0.5 seconds, the
output energises, opening the relay contact.
Generator (S2)
The DSE module’s output drives the closing signal via a normally open contact,
from a slave relay if required.
When the DSE module requires the switch to changeover to S2, the output is
energised which closes the relay contact for 0.5 seconds. After 0.5 seconds, the
output de-energises, opening the relay contact.
Neutral (Off)
The DSE module’s output drives the closing signal via a normally open contact,
from a slave relay if required.
When the DSE module requires the switch to changeover to Off, the output is
energised which closes the relay contact for 0.5 seconds. After 0.5 seconds, the
output de-energises, opening the relay contact.
